Web Forum: Concerns for our town

SHAME of Huddersfield's streets and park - a hotbed of anti-social behaviour. What do you think?

Magdale: “Allowing people to live their entire lives on benefits with nothing constructive to do permits this. It will continue until we as a society put a stop to it. Benefits should be finite in time and thereafter hostel warehousing with basic food to focus the mind on work.”

STEVEN_COLBERT: “I don’t agree that you think that people on benefits are all anti-social. This is about people being anti-social, not about people on benefits.”

Magdale: Mr Colbert, I don’t think all those on benefits are anti-social and benefits have a place in society – but allowing people to exist on benefits ad infinitum allows people to sink to such anti-social behaviour.”

rogerb: “Well said Magdale. Benefits should be a safety net to help support people until they get back into work or training etc, not to provide a lifestyle and, in many cases, a lifelong income at the taxpayer’s expense. By the way, I have just returned from Huddersfield centre and in St Peter’s Gardens quite a few folk were drinking and swearing, so zero tolerance isn’t quite there yet.”

Nightwatchman: “These gardens are right next to a place of worship. I ask the question, would this state of events be allowed in the vicinity of any other of our places of worship in Huddersfield? I would hope that the answer was no, so why is it still happening in St Peter’s Gardens?

“Seems to me not just the traders in the area but the general public of Huddersfield would at least like the ‘zero tolerance’ option promised by the police to be put into effect. Would it be possible to have the police inspector visit the area daily, preferably with his superintendent to make sure this happens? At least give it a month and if the situation does improve then there’s your answer. If not, nothing lost: something else can be tried.”

HolmfirthLife: “I agree with Mr Colbert ... there are some folk that hold down respectable jobs, have nice families etc, then when in drink their behaviour changes.

“It’s not just the youngsters either. I invite folk to wander around Holmfirth on a busy Friday and Saturday night. You will find all social types wandering about with cans of lager, and even wandering from pub to pub across roads with no regard for the traffic and then finally throwing their glasses in the river and urinating where ever they seem to stop, with no regard for other people.

“All it requires is a constant and consistent police presence, not just in Huddersfield and Holmfirth. I am sure it happens in every village and town in Kirklees and the country.”
