MARY Portas calls for cap on charity shops as Huddersfield's total nears 50.
Magdale: “If we shut all the pound and charity shops in Huddersfield, we might as well bulldoze the town as there is nothing else left there.”
Birkbyproud: “Bars and fast food outlets?”
Squidd: “I’d rather a charity shop than an empty unit.”
markmyword49: “The question that should be asked of the charity sector is if they are getting an unfair advantage through reduced rates, rents etc over other retail outlets. If the ‘playing field’ is level then I don’t see a problem with the number.
“Shopping patterns have changed with the advent of out of town and internet buying and the idea that some retailers would return to town centres is a non-starter.
“Until the economy gets back on its feet independent retailers and small start-up shops for niche markets aren’t going to be there to fill empty premises so most small and medium towns are going to look tatty.”
Squidd: “Charity shops get an 80% reduction on their business rates. I don’t begrudge them this, as it is generally for the benefit of a good cause. However, I do believe rate relief should be offered to any business willing to take on an empty retail unit at the current time.”
SimonC: “If companies are so jealous of charities getting reduced rates etc, then how about instead of them making profits for their shareholders they turn into a charity and use any profit to help society? Pretty simple. Just because something is different, it doesn’t mean it’s unfair.”
Village_Idiot: “Pity traffic wardens weren’t so charitable. If they were, I may be tempted to shop in Huddersfield. No chance of that though!”
sickofthis: “I cannot remember the last time I shopped in Huddersfield, it’s that bad. For example last Christmas I had £400 in cash to get my kids’ Christmas presents. Yes, it was last minute but I went in every shop I could think of and got nothing so I jumped on a bus and went to Wakefield – not much better but at least I managed to find stuff. This year I have pre-ordered everything so no need really to go into town and the last few little bits I will go to the new big Toymaster which is probably the only and best place in Huddersfield to get kids’ toys.”
