TRAFFIC calming measures could be imposed in an area near Huddersfield town centre before a controversial new leisure centre is built there.
Plans have been submitted to Kirklees Council for a string of traffic calming measures including a crossing which is wide enough to allow both cyclists and pedestrians to cross, a 20mph speed limit and the installation of speed humps around the Springwood area.
Rutland wrote: “More speed humps to wreck our vehicles. Why do councils (and this one in particular) discriminate against the speed and law observing driver by using these car wreckers instead of using the police to remove bad drivers from the road?
“If the police took a more active role in removing speeding, uninsured, untaxed drivers from the roads of Huddersfield then there would be no need for the careful driver to pay for higher maintenance of their vehicle and no need for KMC to obstruct the roads with speed humps.
“If I put something similar in the road I would be charged with obstruction!”
But aliban doesn’t see the problem: “What is wrong with speed humps? Safety is important to everyone.”
bacup didn’t seem to have much faith: “If the traffic calming introduced is as low key and half-hearted as the one in Almondbury then I fail to see how the residents will benefit.
“Most of the 20mph zone has no speed bumps and is therefore largely ignored by motorists.
“The best method is to remove all speed bumps and install cameras which monitor the average speed over given distances. This gives no one any excuse and protects residents much better. Almondbury essentially has a ‘voluntary scheme’ from which nobody gains anything.”
But seanjohnstone saw drivers as the cause – and solution – of the problem: “All of the traffic calming measures in the world will not stop total idiots from inflicting themselves upon us.
“Instead, why not invest the money in teaching people to cross the road safely? Bring back the Green Cross Code man and make people responsible for their own safety and wellbeing.”
It was the state of the roads rather than the new humps which vexed village_idiot : “Would it be asking too much for the council to fix the roads in need of urgent repair first?
“I’m amazed how they can find the money for speed humps but can’t grit roads in winter.”
anneb thought of another group who use their cars: “If its true what is printed, and the government does shut the streets off, it wont help those who need to use a car, for mobility reasons etc.”
