HERE are the top five stories taken from our website last week.

1. A BODY was found in a Huddersfield canal. Police were alerted after the woman was discovered in the Huddersfield Broad Canal between Red Doles Lane and Red Doles Road, Fartown.

The discovery followed concerns over missing 32-year-old Joyce Pitter, of Blackhouse Road, Fartown, who had not been seen since the previous Wednesday when she visited a local off-licence on Fartown Green Road.

The body was later positively identified as that of Miss Pitter.

2. MUCH of Huddersfield ground to a halt as thousands of public sector workers walked out.

Teachers, council staff, probation officers and lecturers in the town were among millions taking industrial action across the country against government plans to change pension schemes.

The strike caused disruption across Huddersfield.

The vast majority of schools were closed and all Kirklees College sites were shut to students.

3. POLICE made an urgent appeal for witnesses after a dramatic crash shut the M62 for hours.

They wanted to hear from any of the thousands of drivers caught up in the motorway chaos.

A 23-year-old man was airlifted to hospital after the crash – but he and four others hurt all miraculously escaped serious injury.

Police were called after two cars collided near Junction 24, Ainley Top, on Saturday at about 3pm.

4. GARY Speed was ‘the best’ and his death is ‘unbelievable’ according to Huddersfield Town boss Lee Clark and assistant manager Terry McDermott.

Speed, 42, was found dead at his Cheshire home.

Only hours earlier he had appeared on BBC1’s Football Focus programme talking about the future of the Wales national team, which he managed.

5. A TEENAGER broke down in tears as the case against her for causing death by dangerous driving was dropped.

Former Huddersfield New College student Lydia Presley, 19, walked free from court after a judge said she had been driving ‘responsibly’.

Judge Jonathan Rose told Bradford Crown Court that no-one would be held criminally liable for the tragic death of grandmother Mrs Pauline Preston in Barkisland.
