THANDI brothers’ new attempt to build Castle hill pub:
BIC: “Thandi Brothers should have the land taken off them for the cost this farce has cost us the taxpayers and a nice pub with visitor centre and coffee shop should be built by the council and run by the group that runs Castle Hill to make money for regenerating the area around our Castle Hill.
“I would say volunteers would be willing to work there, especially in the coffee shop and visitor centre, or even better we could employ adults with learning difficulties, a move I would imagine would benefit all concerned tremendously.
“Instead of cutting the help for them it would give them the help, sense of being involved and support they need.”
Magdale: “Why do we need another pub? They are closing down left, right and centre.”
IntSticks: “How many councils would allow building on an Iron Age hill fort? Down south they are major tourist attractions – people pay to visit Maiden Castle and the like. Castle Hill may not quite be that (Maiden is the biggest), but a visitor centre part way up, combined with a pub and path to the top would be the best option.”
aliban: “I blame the council not co-operating with the Thandi brothers. I was at Castle Hill in the summer. We do need a pub and restaurant for tourists. It’s a miserable place without the pub which has effect on number of tourists visiting every year as it is declining. The council should not have the final say.”
LewisD: “Quote: “2004: Work is halted after complaints that too much of the original hotel had been torn down.’’ They actually demolished the whole building bit by bit until nothing was left. Even the original cellar was dug out and enlarged.”
SL: “As a major feature of the town and surrounding landscape, Castle Hill should be marketed to its full potential. Surely the best compromise for all concerned would be to let English Heritage manage the site (design/build and future administration), then let the Thandi partnership run any licensed establishment as tied publicans.”
And finally Huddersfield Festival of Light – two shows Saturday after delayed start to three-day festival:
ABywater: “Last night was really good and cancelling the main show meant we visited the fringe events which we hadn’t planned to do. The art market was brilliant (just wish I’d taken money as brilliant Xmas presents) and the aerial show in the Byram Arcade was amazing.”
