Web Forum: Top stories

HERE are the top five stories from last week on www.examiner.co.uk

1. A WORLD Cup winner’s former business was destroyed by a huge fire in Huddersfield and the drama caused massive delays for rush-hour commuters.

The blaze broke out at a building in Outlane where former Huddersfield Town and England star Ray Wilson used to work as a funeral director.

The slip road onto the M62 at Junction 23 was closed for several hours as firefighters dealt with the huge blaze and prepared to demolish the badly-damaged joiners’ workshop.

2. TRIBUTES have been paid to a Huddersfield woman killed in a head-on smash near Castle Hill.

The 54-year-old was involved in the horrific crash last Friday and died of her injuries in hospital.

Diane Lodge, of Outlane, was unconscious when she was cut from her car following the crash on Ashes Lane in Almondbury.

She was rushed to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary where she died from her injuries a short time later.

3. A WOMAN gave police details of her alleged rape in Huddersfield.

The 21-year-old victim was interviewed by specially-trained police officers to piece together what happened during her ordeal in the early hours of the morning.

She raised the alarm shortly before 1am when she ran into a town centre takeaway claiming she had been raped.

The distressed woman asked for help from staff working in McDonald’s in Kirkgate in the early hours. They contacted police.

4. GUSTS of up to 70mph were battering the country early in the week, and were heading for Huddersfield later.

Salendine Nook meteorologist Paul Stevens said gusts were coming in from the west and added that higher areas in the town would be hit with wintry weather later in the week.

5. AS FIRE rescues go, it certainly beats the cat stuck up the tree scenario.

Firefighters from Huddersfield were left bemused after they had to free a young woman trapped in a chair – by handcuffs.

The 18-year-old was tied to the chair by her boyfriend, but there were no kinky antics involved as he had left her outside in the freezing cold ‘for a laugh.’
