SIXTY years and waiting – still no £12m bypass for Flockton:
Rieann: “I am still at a loss as to why lorries are even allowed through Flockton from the Wakefield side. The road just isn’t suitable. A lot of car and lorry drivers also fail to give way when they should be doing so just past the Sun Inn where the road narrows. I have had several near misses here where idiots expect me to reverse when I have right of way! Some also seem to think that a red light before the pub doesn’t apply to them, usually motor bikes and cyclists ... no wonder so many of them have accidents! And as for the lunatics who pay no attention to the 40mph speed limit from the Black Bull towards the village ... how long have you got?”
LewisD: “If they are looking at a relief road from the water tower at New Hall to the National Mining Museum, then it is not up to Kirklees to make any decisions on it. Both of those locations and the land between them is outside the Kirklees boundary and is part of Wakefield.”
koetjebueh: “I commute and pass through Flockton twice a day. All in all, traffic seems to ‘flow’ steadily. Though sometimes, with the narrow roads and HGVs things go wrong when car drivers ignore amber/red lights and the give way signs and end up stopping the flow in both directions. When there’s no room, don’t advance.”
NorwegianBlue: “Flockton residents are sick and fed up of promises made by Kirklees Council. The road was resurfaced so badly a few years ago that last summer it had to be completely re-laid at considerable expense.
“Before this work was carried out residents were promised that it would include road safety improvements. Needless to say, no such improvements were included in the works.
“In addition to the re-laying, the road residents were told the pavements would be re-laid. Again this was not carried out as promised, but the pavements were instead patched. KMC continually promise improvements and then fail to deliver. The last meeting was pretty much held to tell us we would not be getting a bypass. We will be told that KMC are looking into all sorts of other improvements, none of which will materialise.
“In the last few years Wakefield Council have managed to secure funding for the Hemsworth bypass, the link road from the bypass to the A1 and the Normanton bypass. Each of those projects cost considerably more than £12m. When that money was available why did KMC make no effort to secure any for their own projects?
“I asked that question at the last public meeting in Flockton and was fobbed off with the vaguest non-answer I have ever heard. KMC are blaming government cuts now, but what is their excuse for the previous 58 years?”
