Leader: Saturday Scourge of drug crime

THE damage caused by drugs is all too clear to see in today’s story about drug addict Andrew Jagger who committed a string of offences against his own father.

The 26-year-old pleaded guilty to robbery, burglary, fraud and driving offences.

His crimes were committed against his own father such was his desperation to get money for drugs.

There are often very human stories behind drugs and this shows the depths to which people will sink.

It is an evil trade and once people get hooked there seems to be little escape for them.

Jagger’s father, Michael, must have suffered enormously over the last 10 years – and has now reached the end of his patience.

He has told his son he no longer wants to see him in the house and that must be the most painful of all conversations.

Jagger has shown remorse and shame for his actions, but it’s now too late and it may be there is no way back for him to repair the terrible damage done to the relationship with his father.

Let’s hope the only way for him now is up and that during his time in prison he will get the opportunity to come off drugs and turn his life around.

But, then again, aren’t prisons notorious for drugs these days?
