ANYONE interested in fostering disabled children
Feb 3 2010 by Linzi Nicholson, Huddersfield Daily Examiner
ANYONE interested in fostering disabled children or providing respite care should contact Lucy Kirkby, Recruitment Officer Fostering & Adoption, on 01924 483707 or email her at lucy.kirby@kirklees.gov.uk
Generally, fosterers should have:
Previous experience of or interest in caring for a child with a disability or special needs.
Nursing experience or a willingness to undergo training in medical procedures
Knowledge of Makaton, British Sign Language or a willingness to learn if necessary.
A spare bedroom
The time, energy, patience and flexibility to commit to a child with a disability or special needs
A willingness to work with a range of other professionals and support the children’s families
At the moment Kirklees has only three foster carers able to provide respite care for children with disabilities. Short-term care is also provided at the Hollybank or Orchard View residential homes.
To become a foster carer there is a process of assessment and training. On approval full training is provided, as well as ongoing support and a generous allowance.
