ACROSS in America there’s an election on the way.

You’ll notice this if you watch BBC News as a variety of correspondents breathlessly tell us about President Obama’s poll numbers in Peoria.

But there’s a row (imagine that) brewing. It concerns someone who is aged 43, stands a whopping 8ft 2ins and is yellow.

Yes, Big Bird from Sesame Street is at the centre of an electoral spat.

Republican challenger Mitt Romney wants to cut the budget of public broadcaster PBS. PBS makes Sesame Street.

So the Democrats have created an ad featuring Mr Romney and Mr (or is it Mrs?) Bird.

The Republicans aren’t happy about this and Sesame Workshop are staying out of it, saying they are non-partisan and want an end to the Internet-based ad.

It’s said US politics is dirtier than our own but this ad also contains the fantastic phrase: “Big. Yellow. A menace to our economy. Mitt Romney knows it’s not Wall Street you have to worry about. It’s Sesame Street.”

Can you imagine David Cameron using Jess from Postman Pat to illustrate why the Post Office should be sold off?
