Beaumont House on Beaumont Street is surely one of the oldest properties in Emley and overlooks the 800-year-old Emley Cross.

The former Post Office building is situated in the heart of Emley village and is the current home of Michael and Helen Downes and their family.

The Downes family have spent 14 happy years at Beaumont House, but are now ready for a change.

However, they still want to stay in the local area close to their children’s schools, which are part of the three-tier Shelley College pyramid system.

Michael, who works for Huddersfield’s Bower & Child, said: “We think the house is well over 150 years old and was originally owned by the Savile Estate.

“It’s rather nice to live in a house which is part of the local village history. I suppose our family is another chapter in the history of Beaumont House.

“Apparently the Mayor of Emley lived here at some point.’’

He thinks the original part of the house was built around the 1830s and was then just a two-up, two-down property.

“A large extension has made the property quite a substantial house, but this was added long before we lived here. It has been done very well however and the stonework does blend in well with the original house,’’ said Michael.

Together with his wife Helen, who works for Fox’s Biscuits as a product developer, Michael has enjoyed living at Beaumont House, which is much more spacious inside than you would first imagine.

The property is full of character throughout and includes numerous original features such as ceiling roses and coving. Moving between the old and new part is quite seamless as it all blends together very well.

Downstairs an entrance vestibule leads through into a very large dining/living room, which is perfect for family use. Also on this floor is a lounge with a log burning stove and French doors out on to a patio area and a contemporary kitchen with stone-flag flooring, a stable-style door and an Aga, which forms a central point. A downstairs cloakroom completes this floor. The house also has a cellar.

Upstairs the house is really spacious and home to four bedrooms, including a good-sized master bedroom in the old part of the house with a contemporary wet room and a drench shower-head.

Bedrooms two and three are also spacious doubles and the fourth, although a smaller single, has a walk-in wardrobe.

A contemporary bathroom completes the upstairs accommodation and has a curved bath with shower over.

To the rear of the property is a large garden with extensive lawn and a seating area. The garden, which is very enclosed and private, also has a vegetable plot.

The house is just minutes away from Emley’s Millennium Green, established as part of the year 2000 celebrations, and open countryside.

Beaumont House is ideally placed for local amenities including a convenience store, school, a local farm shop and quick access to the M1.

Michael said: “Children leaving Emley First School go by bus to the middle and high schools but we find the three-tier school system works really well.’’

This is a lovely spacious family home, right in the heart of Emley, which has a large private garden to the rear and is full of charm and character.
