It certainly is a long shot but an appeal goes out today to see if anyone can help find a ring lost 46 years ago.

It has been made by Carol Rees who lost it when she was just 18.

But it is linked in with World War One and has such sentimental significance for her we thought we’d give it a go.

Carol, now a 64-year-old grandmother of five living in Doncaster, said: “In 1968 I attended a teacher training college in Huddersfield. It was located above the Co-op at the end of New Street.

“I was 18 at the time and a few years earlier my grandfather had given me my grandmother’s wedding ring, but a few weeks later he died. The ring was very precious to me.

“During a lecture the ring fell from my finger and was lost. I searched high and low for it but to no avail.

“I look back with deep sadness at its loss. It was very special.

“It was engraved on the inside with the name of my grandmother, Alice Wood, and a date which was possibly her wedding date. The ring was gold with a Yorkshire rose pattern all the way round the band.

“Might it be possible that one of your readers found or bought the ring at some time?

“Grandad was in the York and Lancaster Regiment in World War One and then after the war he served in Turkey. Sadly he died before I had any interest in his army life. The ring was the only thing he gave me and I lost it through carelessness.

“It was too big for my finger and just slipped off”
