Tomorrow is Anti Slavery Day. Considering Britain abolished slavery in 1807, you wouldn’t think there would be need to have a special day for it anymore.

Except that it still goes on today around the world, in war zones, illegally and in so-called civilised society’s like Britain behind closed doors.

Oscar winning director Steve McQueen, who made the film 12 Years A Slave, is the patron of the Anti Slavery campaign group, which celebrated the 175th anniversary of Anti-Slavery International at a gala evening in London.

McQueen said: “We should be mindful that the violence of slavery still exists and affects at least 21 million across the world.

“London was the birthplace of the global struggle against slavery so it seems fitting to be here to mark this occasion and to reflect with regret that the sort of violence depicted in my movie 12 Years a Slave is still commonplace.

“Today slavery may ook a bit different but the oppression is just as damaging.

“Anti-Slavery is at the forefront of this fight. And your support is vital. Not just today. Not just tomorrow but until we’re no longer needed.”
