FOLLOWING on from the horsemeat memories, Howard Boothroyd of Highburton recalls an old tale about the Pack Horse Yard.

During a royal visit to Huddersfield in the early part of the last century, King George V broke the heel of his shoe in the grounds of the Parish Church.

Fortunately, he was opposite the Pack Horse Yard (now the Pack Horse shopping centre) where cobbler Eli Smith had premises. Eli repaired it.

Howard says: “Smith promptly placed the following notice in his window: Cobbler to the King.

“This was followed by a notice in the local horsemeat trader’s window nearby: Knackers to Eli Smith.

“Perhaps a horsemeat shop was there, a long time ago. And if this story isn't true, well, it ought to be.”
