MY chum Phil, a fellow member of the Jacob's Well Monday Club, was interested in the piece about John Briscoe, the former local lad who travelled the world playing football and eventually settled in America.

I used a photograph of him with Sir Bobby Charlton at a Manchester United dinner at Old Trafford.

“I went to Dalton Junior School with John and also lived on the same Almondbury council estate,” says Phil. “I haven’t seen him for many years now, but my long standing memory of him is what a lucky chap he was. Besides being one of the best local footballers at that time, he was also a very good looking chap who had all the women chasing after him at the Starlight Dance Studio’s (now McDonalds). He was a bit of a George Best type in the 1960s and it looks as though he is still wearing well.”

Good looking and talented. Phil and I just had to make do with good looking. Well, Phil did.
