Reader Sandie Chappell of Bailiff Bridge says: “Loved reading your article about the picture palaces in Huddersfield.

“Brought back wonderful memories of my teens, boys, make-up, fashion – wonderful times.”

Sandie (nee Robinson and formerly from Benomley Crescent) added a new question.

“I’m writing to see if any readers remember the old tramp who used to go to the cafe above The Ritz picture house.

“He would choose a table with at least two chairs, spread out a newspaper in the other chair to represent a person, and talk to it.

“I’m sure someone will remember him.”

It seems back then, town was full of characters.

It probably still is – but we won’t realise until someone sends a letter to the Examiner in 40 years time and say: “Remember that little bloke with a beard who used to write for the paper? What a nutter he was.”

And they wouldn’t be wrong.
