HUDDERSFIELD-BORN hair stylist Marcello Moccia has been awarded the title of North Western Hairdresser of the Year at the British Hairdressing Awards.
Marcello, who has Italian parentage and lives in Flockton, competed against six other stylists from the region to take the title.
Now the owner of two salons in Wakefield and one in Leeds, he trained in Rome and worked in Switzerland and London before settling back in West Yorkshire.
Marcello, 41, started his hairdressing career at the age of 14 as a Saturday boy in a Holmfirth salon. When his family moved from Fartown to Rome he was able to train and work in the city before returning to the UK in 1994.
He has had several nominations for the Hairdresser of the Year title but until now the top prize has evaded him.
“It still doesn’t feel quite real,” says Marcello, whose partner Claire Brown is also his business partner.
They have three children aged between nine and three years.
“But it’s wonderful for a small independent hairdressers like ours to get the title.”
Marcello chose Wakefield to launch his first salon, Room 97, after seeing a row of empty buildings from the town’s railway station. The business now employs 30 staff and he and Claire were able to expand with their third salon in May this year.
