FASHION is getting behind the ShelterBox charity that delivers emergency relief to disaster areas around the world.

From this week Topshop stores are selling friendship bracelets to benefit the charity.

Four bracelets are on offer – featuring coloured leather bands and engraved metal discs – at £2. A £1 donation from each will go to ShelterBox, which was set up in 2000 to provide essential shelter and survival items for families in the aftermath of a disaster.

ShelterBox was founded by Tom Henderson, a Rotarian and former Royal Navy search and rescue diver. He realised that when aid was delivered to a disaster area charities tended to concentrate on medicine and food. His charity allows survivors to have a temporary home with a few of the normal comforts.

Each large, green box, which costs around £600, is tailored to a disaster but typically contains a tent for an extended family, blankets, water storage and purification equipment, cooking utensils, a stove, a basic tool kit, a children’s activity pack and other vital items.

Since its inception ShelterBox has delivered thousands of boxes to areas affected by earthquakes, floods, volcanoes, tsunamis and conflict.
