She has won over one of the world’s most well-known fashion brands - with a taste of Yorkshire style.

Huddersfield fashion design student Sarah Broadhead is the only person from Yorkshire to be shortlisted for Levi Strauss’ international internship, making it into the final 20, after designing denim inspired by our region’s mining heritage.

The brief for applicants was called ‘what will denim look like in 2020?’ , with the aim of designing jeans for the future generation.

Sarah, 21, a third-year fashion design student at the University of Huddersfield, was shortlisted after impressing Levis with her retro landgirl-inspired denim outfits.

If successful, she will join the label on a placement in San Francisco, California.

Her designs featured dungarees and jeans inspired by clothing worn by miners in the region.

Originally from Wakefield, Sarah said she drew inspiration from the National Coal Mining Museum.

She said: “It was the earth tones and imagery from there which helped me to develop the colour palette for my designs, lifting the typical miner’s uniform to a more contemporary modern alternative.”

Sarah also made the designs gender-neutral, in line with the progression of gender equality.

“The quality of fabric is highly considered within my collection,” Sarah said.

“I used mixed coloured recycled denims from 100% cotton, following Levi’s Water<Less process for garment production.

“The denim combined against the wool focuses on the traditional side of fabrics using their natural strengths of reliability.”

Sarah is no stranger to success having previously won the Most Commercial Design category in a competition run by the Worshipful Company of Glovers of London in 2013.

In 2014 she was also shortlisted for the ASBCI Student Design Awards.
