Earlier the community policeman for Lowerhouses - who patrols his beat on a bike every day - presented cycling proficiency certificates, badges and bicycle locks to 19 pupils who had passed the proficiency test. 26th June 1991.1 of 15Playaway... pictured are some of the 20 children from all over Kirklees who enjoyed a play day at Mount Pleasant Sports Centre, Lockwood, organised by Helen Robinson, recreation officer for disabilities. Voluntary helpers pitched in to help the children, aged between eight to 15, take part in activities such as this parachute game, football and volleyball. 30th May 1991.2 of 15Junior health freaks!... Pupils of Kirkroyds Infants school took part in a sponsored bounce as part of an organised Health Day. The event was part of a project on healthy living which pupils at the New Mill School took part in during the week. Parents and other adults were invited to attend. the open day included displays, football coaching and stands on a variety of health topics and people working in related jobs. The school is hoping to raise around £500 from the sponsored bounce which will go towards computer equipment. 25th June 1991.3 of 15A group of Lepton youngsters have raised £17 for Huddersfield's Wish Project by organising their own jumble sale. The money will go to the project's hostel for homeless women in the town. The event, which ended last night, included pupils of Newsome High and Newsome Junior Schools, I'd showed a variety of fashions from leisure to bridal wear and a range of hired ball-gowns. It was organised by textile teacher Gillan Capewell, who was hoping to raise around £400 so textile department pupils can take part in more practical work. 25th June 1991.5 of 15Precious pennies... Michael Dempsey adds one more coin to a chain of cash that went across Hepworth to celebrate the village's feast. The mile of pennies linked the old school - now the village hall - to the new Hepworth Junior and Infants School. Local people gave the coins, which will be given to the two organisations. The event also included a procession, music from Hepworth Band, children's races, country dancing and a visit from the Tetley shire horses. 24th June 1991.6 of 15Flying the flag... that's what Netherton Moor Cub pack is doing to celebrate the movement's 75th birthday - and seen with the group¿ flag are (front, from left) nine-year-old twins Edward and James Broadbent and brothers Edward, 10 and Gareth Johns, eight. Also pictured are parents and Cub leaders Susan and Kevin Johns. Cubs across the country have been asked to design their own flag and then find unusual places to fly them. The Netherton flag is being flown from the Co-op building on New Street, one of the tallest in Huddersfield town centre. 24th June 1991.7 of 15Play pennies... these children wrote the name of their playgroup with coins instead of a pen. More than 20 children from Meltham Mills Church Playgroup collected 1,000 pennies as part of national play week. The £10 raised will go towards new toys for the playgroup, which meets at St James¿ Church, Meltham Mills. The playgroup takes children from two-and-a-half to school age and new members will be joining in September. Mrs Lindsay Wardill said the group prepares youngsters for school through play. 19th June 1991.8 of 15Working with Welephant... West Yorkshire Fire Service's safety conscious friend visited Rowley Hill playgroup. The visit was arranged by care trainee Clair Hannam, who is on work placement with the group. She organised the visit as a project for the City and Guilds course in care, which she is taking through Y Training, Lockwood. Welephant (pictured with Station Officer Harry Stoyles, of Birkenshaw) told children about fire safety and the dangers of playing with matches. Station Officer Stoyles spoke about firefighters. 18th June 1991.9 of 15Sock it to them... Pupils at Ashbrow Junior School, who have been helping Romanian orphans. Class six held a fun day with a variety of fund-raising events. The class has been working with its twin class at a Leeds school to raise money for the orphanage visited by TV star Anneka Rice in her Challenge Anneka programme. As well as collecting cash, the pupils have collected wool and socks which will be given to volunteer Liz Smith when the two classes meet for a special presentation. Scholes Junior and Infants¿School under-nine rugby team won a mini-competition organised by Underbank Rugby League Club. They beat teams from Hinchliffe Mill and Brockholes Junior and Infants' school to take the trophy. The Woodhouse pack took up a challenge to design and make their own flag to mark the 75th anniversary of Cubs worldwide - then fly it from an unusual place. Eight-year-old Gareth Firth came up with the winning design in the shape and colours of a neckerchief - and he was presented with a watch from his pack. Highburton First School pupils who raised £146 for famine victims in Africa by a jumble sale they staged in school. Area representative of Save the Children Andy Brown, received the cheque presented by 10-year-old Stephanie Metcalfe. 11th June 1991.13 of 15Cash for the Kurds... Students taking the certificate in pre-vocational education at Huddersfield Technical College have raised £100 for the Save the Children Fund Kurdish Children Appeal. Students on the caring course made and sold peg-bag, greeting cards, dried flowers and plants to raise cash, and students on the business course washed cars and sold T-shirts in aid of the appeal. Student Nicola Maidens (left) and course tutor Fran Valentine are pictured with other CPVE students and the cheque. 11th June 1991.14 of 15Captain beaky... the more-than-life-sized puffin swooped into the Children's Bookshop at Lindley to help celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Puffin company, which publishes children's books. A giant cake helped to mark the occasion, along with an appearance from Bob Wilson, who created the character Stanley Bagshaw. Children from nearby schools took part in the activities, and in true party style went home with a goodie bag. 10th June 1991.15 of 15
