Fartown High School pupils get in the mood for their London debut. The students aged between 12 and 16, are looking forward to July 4 when they have a date at the Queen Elizabeth Hall to take a part in the National Festival of Music and Dance. There they will perform a piece of work they wrote and choreographed themselves that was originally written for the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, presented in the Town Hall, last November. They competed against other teams from the North in Newcastle and won a place at the week long festival. That's the message from five-year-old Leanne Kitson, a member of the new Kirkheaton Rainbows group. It is aimed at five to seven-year-olds going into Brownies, and was organised by Mrs Jenette Dent (Pictured). She is now the Rainbow Guider and her helpers are Mrs Sharon Roberts and Mrs Gillian Coulman. The group has 16 members, who meet at the Kirkheaton Scout headquarters. 10th May 1990.2 of 16Look out world, here we come... intrepid globetrotters from the Scout movement, who are out to raise £8,000 to finance a trip to Korea for the 17th World Jamboree in 1991. They are from left: Richard Beaumont, James Ellam, Graeme Murray, and Robin Ferguson. The scouts each have to raise £2,000 for the three-week trip which will include seven nights in Japan and 14 under canvas in the Sorek National Park, Korea, where the jamboree will take place. The youngsters have decided to pool their wits are jointly raising the funds, instead of individually. Future money spinners include a chariot race and coffee mornings. Graeme and Richard are both members of the 35th Huddersfield (Lepton Methodist) Scout group. Robin is a member of the 5th Huddersfield (Skelmanthorpe) , and James attends the 7th Huddersfield (Clayton West) group.19th May 1990.3 of 16Huddersfield Royal Infirmary has been presented with a national award for its work on infertility. Dental nurse Annette Brodie talks about teeth at Slaithwaite Health centre to these children from Linthwaite Ardron Memorial CofE School. They are (from left) Hayley Newbould, Holly Wilton, Toni Brownson, Terri Longson, Matthew Neary and Oliver Greenoff. The pupils were at the centre for a play surgery organised for four to seven-year-olds as part of National Smile Week, entitled Give Us A Smile. The centre had displays of modern dentistry, a dentist was available to answer questions and balloons, stickers and painting sheets were given away to children. Mrs Penny Joseph, Huddersfield acting district dental officer, said it has never been easier to keep a glowing smile. 'With modern dental methods and preventative techniques, everyone can have a smile to be proud of' she said. 16th May 1990.5 of 16London Marathon runner Mr Clive Jackson (right) raised £140 for a unit for handicapped children at Rawthorpe Infants and Nursery CofE School. He was sponsored by other regulars and staff at the Jolly Sailor, Dalton, and Tetleys brewery paid his travelling and hotel expenses. Nields Junior and Infant School opens its nature pond at assembly. Mr Andrew Mansell (left), of Holmbridge, who built the pond at the Slaithwaite school, and Mr Bob McCartney, director general of the Vehicle Builders' and Repairers' Association, who sponsored it, fish for the newly introduced goldfish. The pond is part two of a scheme to build an extensive nature and wildlife area at the school. Children brought in snails, tadpoles and pond skater insects to start the pool off. Headmaster Harry Trumbell said all the 135 pupils would use the pond in their nature studies. The Rev Robin Townsend blessed the pond in assembly which was attended by the chairman of the school governors Mrs Christine Shepherd. 16th May 1990.7 of 16Five-a-side champions - Bradley Juniors have scored their very own cup final win. While Manchester United and Crystal Palace were preparing for their FA Cup Wembley encounters, the Bradley team were walking away with a trophy of their own. The boys netted the Diamond Trophy after winning the finals of a five-a-side competition at Deighton High School. The competition was organised by staff and pupils from Deighton and involved the school's four feeder junior schools. Captain Steve Smith shows off the trophy to team-mates Neil Day, Lawrence Binns, Paul Bradshaw and Simon Thornton, watched by referees Mark Alston, Marc Graley and John Dysart. 11th May 1990.8 of 16Pedestrians - and vehicles - crossing... Mount Pleasant Junior School pupils have had a road safety lesson with a difference. Huddersfield accident prevention officer, PC Alan Laurie, visited the school to get over the road safety message and the seven to nine year olds took part in a role-play exercise called Safe and Sound. The children pretended to be pedestrians, vehicles, a police officer and a crossing patrol warden to act out road situations. 10th May 1990.9 of 16Pupils from a Dalton junior school haven't been foiled in their attempts to help the Stop Press Guide Dog Appeal. Youngsters at St Joseph's RC School are lending their support for the appeal by collecting together foil, dishes and anything else made of aluminium so they can sell it for recycling and pass on the money. Seen gathering together lots of dishes are ¿rsty Richards, Anthony Gallivan, Katie Meehan, Sarah Ainley, Clare Connolly, Rebecca Ramsden and Katrina Farnsworth. 8th May 199010 of 16Fashion on a shoestring... proving that you don't need loadsa-money to cut a dash are these enterprising clothing industry YTS trainees. They took to the catwalk for a fashion show organised by the Clothing Group Training Association at Huddersfield¿ Textile House, St Andrew¿ Road. Twenty-four budding designers were asked to complete two outfits with a budget of just ¿15. Students are pictured wearing their designs (centre) while others look on. 15th May 1990.11 of 16Speed kings... youngsters from the 11th Holy Trinity Scouts in Marsh raced off with top prizes at a major Scout car racing event in the West Midlands. The Scouts entered two cars - Red Hot and White Hot - in the annual Stourbridge Scout Car Races and were fastest in the under 13 1/2 and under 15 classes. Competing against 20 other groups, they were awarded trophies for the most points gained and for the fastest Venture Scout racers. Pupils of the school raised the money by sponsoring BBC TV soap star Suzanne Tully (Michelle in Eastenders) in the London Marathon. 11th May 1990.13 of 16Top readers at a Huddersfield school have gained medals and certificates in a sponsored programme which has also earned them more than £1,200-worth of books for their classrooms. Children at Our Lady of Lourdes RC School, Sheepridge, were challenged to read seven books during a seven-week period to gain a certificate, eight books to gain a silver medal and ten to gain a gold. The certificates and medals were presented by World Book Childcraft International, Pictured with the certificates and children from the school are Mr David Ramanauskas and head teacher Mr James Blaney. Certificates were gained by 108 children at the school, silver medals by 13 children and golds by 90 young readers. 11th May 1990.14 of 16Almondbury Scouts and Cubs are in a winning mood. Members of 37th Almondbury Methodist Scouts followed grid references and clues on a 13-mile walk from Blackmoorfoot to Lepton to beat three other teams from the South East District. The party of 15 students aged 13 to 15 from Siegen last year. The group was given a civic welcome by Kirklees Mayor Clr Colin Watson and was presented with a framed copy of the Kirklees coat of arms.
