Some 30 cubs got together to clear the area of rubble and other debris - left when an extension was built for the headquarters. Mr Clayton, 73, is his third year as president. He bowls for the Springwood club and for Hillhouse and Birkby Veterans. Mrs Clayton, 76, is also a keen bowler. The couple, who live in Birkby, worked at Hopkinsons, Birkby, for 19 years and at a Lockwood firm for 30 years. Mrs Clayton, a former hairdresser, worked at Brook Motors. Twenty-six children completed a week's proficiency training during the Easter holidays. 23rd April 1986.4 of 24A helping hand... parent Mrs Lynda Cockroft, of Hill Top, with children in a crafts club at Wilberlee Junior and Infants School, Slaithwaite. She is one of four parents who go into the school every Wednesday afternoon to help staff run the weekly clubs. All 61 children at the school join one of the nine clubs every week. They are for computer or media studies, cookery, crafts, crochet, drama, gardening, interesting places in Slaithwaite and sewing. 23rd April 1986.5 of 24These tottering towers helped raise some £100 at Quarry Hill Pre-School Playgroup, Almondbury, this morning when 24 children took part in a sponsored build-a-brick event. The children, aged between two and four years, were sponsored by family and friends. The proceeds will go towards buying new outdoor toys such as tricycles and prams. The event was held at St Michael and St Helen's Church. A party day at Mercedes-Benz dealers, Huddersfield Garages, of Mount, Outlane, saw them present a huge birthday cake to Holly Bank School, Lindley. Pictured making the presentation to school deputy head Mr John Procter (centre) and garage service adviser Mr Ian Bloom and general manager Mr David Gatehouse. Behind them is a £22,000 mini-bus given to the school by ICI and supplied by the garage. About 70 children from the Netherton School of Dancing gave three performances, joined by dance teachers Mrs Janet Wojciechowski and Mrs Glenys Smith. Honley cubs and their Akela, Mr Leslie Chadwick, provided comic sketches. There was further dancing from members of the Netherton keep-fit class and Examiner Search for a Star finalist Andrew McDermott did impressions. Pianists were Mrs Sheila Hodgson, who wrote some of the music for the show, and Mrs Susan Haigh, Mr jack Merewood and the compere. The club will meet weekly at the Darby and Joan Club premises, Church Lane to give pensioners a chance to meet new friends and enjoy a low cost meal. The opening was attended by Kirklees Mayor and Mayoress Clr and Mrs Colin Walker, and the charity's organising secretary, Miss Ruth Mayall. Meals were cooked and served by volunteers, and housebound people were taken tot he event by members of Denby Dale Lions Club. Over 60 scouts, cubs, guides and brownies took part in the three-show production at Almondbury Methodist Church. Sketches included spoofs on the ballet Swan Lake and the BBC TV comedy 'Allo 'Allo. The producer was Jean Bareham. 4th April 1986.16 of 24An old scout flag has returned to its village of origin - 50 years after it first went into use. Reg and Ellen Carter, who ran a chip shop in Marsden in pre-war days, presented the Union Flag to the village scout group in 1936, but the emblem disappeared when the group went out of existence. It was found recently in a scouts' storeroom at Almondbury and David Aldridge, grandson of the Carters and assistant district commissioner for Huddersfield south-east, decided he would refurbish the flag and present it to the present Marsden group - the 14th Huddersfield (Marsden United Reformed Church). The party was a reward for many of the 300 youngsters who regularly deliver over 73,000 copies of the Weekly News free newspaper published by Huddersfield Newspapers Ltd. Three-and-a-half-year-old William Day was presented with the Raymond Pearson water baby cup at the water babies' swimming session at Elland baths. William, the son of Mr and Mrs Andrew Day, of Martin Green Lane, Greetland, has been attending the classes since he was six months old and his 18-month-old brother, Edward, is now also a water baby. The presentation was made by the Mayoress of Calderdale, Mrs Mary Lawler, and Deputy Mayoress Mrs Shirley Toner. The water babies' classes this year have a membership of 40 and are instructed by Mrs Mavis Smith. 8th April 1986.20 of 24Marsden couple Albert and Annie Whiteley - who met at a Sowerby Bridge dance where Mr Whiteley was in the band - have just celebrated their golden wedding. They were married at Christ Church, Sowerby Bridge, and lived there for three years before moving to their present home in Rock View. Their two daughters, Jean and Margaret, are both married and live locally. Jean has two teenage children and Margaret works for the Inland Revenue. Mr Whiteley was a textile machine fitter at John Edward Crowthers in Marsden before he retired. He now enjoys playing the organ and piano. His wife left work to have the first of their children. She is a member of Marsden Parish Church Mothers' Union. 9th April 1986.21 of 24Lining up for their big moment are these acts in the third heat of the Examiner Search for a Star competition at Huddersfield's Adega nightclub last night. The winners were pop group China Rose, in second place was female duo Merangue and pop group Ramkee were third. China Rose go through to the grand final on April 30. The remaining heats will be on April 16 and 23. Both attend the Audrey Spencer School of Dancing and are now working on a routine for a ballet duet.
