Semi-finalists were promising Huddersfield players Heath Parkin and Simon Armitage. Joanne Smith, of Doncaster, won the ladies' event, beating Ashley Morrell, of Baildon, 6-1, 7-6 in the final. Twelve-year-old David Fox, of Kirkheaton Cricket and Bowling Club, has just won the Huddersfield Boys Merit for the third time. And on each occasion his prize has been a set of woods presented to the winner by former Barkers Sports Easter Handicap winner John Dews, the landlord of the Commercial Hotel at Slaithwaite. But there's good news for next year's competitors. David will be too old to enter. He only beat the deadline this year by a few days. 25th August 1987.5 of 29Sweet-toothed Ben Pace couldn't wait to get his teeth into a bar of chocolate after a 12-hour fast for the half million Examiner Bodyscanner Appeal. The fast was especially hard for 11-year-old Ben, of Cleveland Road, Edgerton - because his father Mr Alex Pace is a research engineer for Rowntree Mackintosh chocolate and confectionery manufacturers. And the house is always well-stocked with discount Rowntrees chocolate, said his mum, Mrs Valerie Parce. But Ben managed to resist. 'He was weakening at the end and his dad had to take him for a game of golf to take his mind off eating,' said Mrs Pace. Between 25 and 30 members set off today for one week. The visit is the second to the twin town of the company, based at Paddock Youth Club. 19th August 1987.10 of 29Up, up and away - British Gas home service adviser Nicola Brown helps some of the 200 entrants who took part in a balloon race from the High Street gas showrooms in Huddersfield to raise money for the appeal - with a personal stereo for the winner. Showroom staff boosted the entry cash by holding a cake sale. 22nd August 1987.11 of 29Putting the pieces in place - seven-year-old Debbie Washington was among the youngsters who tried their skills at a jigsaw jamboree in Huddersfield Junior Library. The event, which featured a wide variety of jigsaws, was held as part of the library's summer programme for children. 11th August 1987.12 of 29Hi Ho, it's off to work we go - for these four members of a Huddersfield stage and dance school. They have been selected from more than 80 children to play the dwarfs in the pantomime performance of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves at Halifax Civic Theatre. Sarah, 23, of Scapegoat Hill, a stylist at the Roger David hair salon in Byram Street, Huddersfield, for four years, is now having her silver award-winning entry in the L'Oreal Photo Fashion Competition re-assessed for a possible gold. 12th August 1987.15 of 29Meltham girls Julie Oldfield (left) and Julie Hutson have raised over £30 to help fund treatment for a boy injured in a bomb blast. The two 11-year-olds raised the money with a toy sale and a sponsored run from Meltham to Netherton and back. Their donation will help pay for treatment for facial injuries suffered by young Abdul Bashir in a bomb attack on his home in Pakistan. Donations are being collected by a Sunday newspaper, which recently featured the story. 5th August 1987.16 of 29Colne Valley Leisure Centre offered a weird and wonderful pastime yesterday - ice skating without the ice. Trying to find their feet on the jigsaw ice rink, made up of plastic sections which covered 2000sq ft of the centre's sports hall are Claire Manning (left), Adele Walker, Mandy Cartwright, Yvette Day and Rachel Coates. The portable rink's owner, Mr Simon Clayton from Thirsk, said: 'The rink can be made to fit any square or rectangle shape - and it all fits into a Ford Transit van.' 17th August 1987.17 of 29About to have a ball and raise funds for crippled children - Huddersfield branch committee of Action Research for the Crippled Child treasurer Mrs Sharon Sampson (left), chairman Mrs Jane Sykes (centre) and secretary Mrs Janet Dyson are seen at the start of a Caribbean ball held at the weekend at the Farnley Tyas home of Mrs Sykes and her husband, Clr John Sykes. About 120 attended the ball, which raised over £1,500 for branch funds. The Great Yorkshire Pudding Eating competition was held at the Castle Hill Hotel among three landlords, who hoped to raise about £500 in sponsorship for the appeal. Sixty-five members of the Outlane troop have just returned from the 32nd Rasteeder Music Festival in West Germany, where they were guests of the Rasteeder Show Band. The Ambassadors made their international debut by coming second overall in a field of nearly 60 bands, and they are now rehearsing for the British Youth Marching Band Association finals at Wembley Stadium on November 8. Competitors had to tackle a square of letters and find districts of Huddersfield.
