He was one of about 40 cubs from the 23rd Huddersfield (Shepley) park who took turns to shine shoes over a three-hour period as part of Job Week, sponsored by Johnsons'Wax, who provide the polish, they did the same in Shepley earlier in the week for an hour and altogether raised £40 for cub funds. 2nd April 1988.1 of 28Vice-Admiral Sir Lancelot Bell-Davies, chairman of the United Kingdom Sea Cadet Corps Committee, presented the awards at an annual prize giving ceremony in Huddersfield. Elliot Day (right) and Robrt Gothard have both won the Gold Arrow Award earlier than usual. The badge is not normally awarded to cubs until they are 11 Ð but Robert is only nine and Elliot is 10. Elliot, a pupil of St John's School, Golcar, and Robert, who attends Golcar Junior School, are both members of the 39th Parkwood Methodist Cubs. Both boys are keen swimmers and they also share an interest in drawing and making models. They recently took part in the Colne Valley circular walk to raise money for scout and cub hut repairs. Huddersfield ice-cream firm manager Mr Joe Longo and Mrs Rita Mackenzie add an extra significance to the trade's logo, Mind That Child, by handing over a £557 cheque to Veronica Simpson, of the Children's Society. Mr Longo, of Longo's Ices, of Dalton, and Mrs Mackenzie organised a charity ball, auction and raffle at the George Hotel. And by the end of the night the guests had dug deep into their pockets to raise £557 for the society. Entrants in the competition have to collect data on air, noise and water pollution, and present it in as novel a way as possible. Most were married on Easter Saturday 50 years ago and their trip out was captured on film by a BBC television crew, which is making a documentary about the Examiner and its role in the community. The giant egg comes from nine-year-old Bryony MacKenzie who won a draw, organised by Boots, King Street, which gave her the right to send the egg to a children's charity of her choice. Jane, eight, won the junior classical trio trophy with partners Helen Morson and Louise Wade. Karen, 13, won the intermediate novice trophy for cabaret and classical sections and Julie, five, scooped the baby trophy for highest cabaret mark. The group was one of nine from the Huddersfield South-West Scout District which took part in the 12-mile walk covering Paddock, Longwood, Golcar, Linthwaite and Crosland Moor. The walk, organised by assistant district commissioner Mr Jim Hunter, included test along the way for pitching tents, local knowledge, first-aid, pioneering, cliff rescue and knots. The couple, who live at Lakeside Court, Lindley, married at St Stephen's Church, Lindley. They have two daughters and two grandchildren. Arthur began his career at Haigh's where he worked as a cutter. He left to serve during the way with the Royal Ordnance Corps before returning for a year. He left Haigh's to join the Huddersfield Transport Corporation as a general labourer. In 1954 he moved to the Post Office in Northumberland Street and worked as a postman. He retired from there in 1974. May began her working life at Haigh's and in 1952 she designed motifs for Joyville Babywear in Lord Street. She retired in 1977. 15th April 1988.20 of 28A couple who moved from Hull to Huddersfield to escape war-time bombing are celebrating their golden wedding anniversary with a family reunion. Inee and Sydney Fredrick Bean were married in Hull where Mr Bean worked as a compositor. On moving to Huddersfield he joined Whiteleys at Lockwood as a lathe tuner. Later he moved to Hopkinsons at Birkby to work in the stores. He retired in 1978. Inee managed The Wool Shop, King Street and retired in 1973. The Nissan dealer gave the 18th Woodhouse troop £50 for washing the cars on their forecourt as part of Job Week. Half of the money will be used for the troop's normal activities and the rest will help pay for their camp in Scotland this summer. The troop, re-formed in February, desperately needs more money so leaders are considering extending the car-washing idea to provide local firms with a cleaning service. 6th April 1988.24 of 28Meet Welephant's winners... young artists at Rawthorpe Junior School pupils were rewarded for their work when Welephant the West Yorkshire Fire Service mascot, presented prizes to the winners of the fire service drawing competition. A Welephant record, posters and stickers were won by Mia Tinham, eight, Daniel Robertson, seven, and Matthew Mallinson, seven. Three classes at the school took part in a project on fire safety and the fire service and Welephant went to the school last month with Huddersfield Fire Station representatives to talk to pupils. Welephant organised a competition for the children during his visit. It was judged by Huddersfield firemen who chose one winner from each of the three classes. 18th April 1988.25 of 28If you want to get ahead get a hat... Silly hats were the order of the day for Kirklees voluntary rangers Robert Peaker (left), Richard Kimberley (back) and Stephen Ridley. The rangers, who led countryside walks, tried the titfers for an Easter bonnet parade between Marsden railway station car park and Tunnel End at Standedge. Emley's Northern Counties East League Reserve side were determined not to be outgunned by their senior squad who have reached the FA Vase final, meeting Colne Dynamoes at Wembley on April 23, and they won the league's Reserve Division championship by a mile.
