They were at Honley High School for the annual Holme Valley five-a-side competition which was won this year by Honley wolf troop. In the final the Honley team beat Thurstonland 2-1. Thurstonland scout Duncan Berry was named outstanding player of the evening.10th May 1985.14 of 31Penalties decided a cup final fro five-a-side footballers from Huddersfield South West district scouts. A team from the 43rd Crosland Moor scout group came away with the trophy after the sudden-death play off against paddock Scouts. The two teams were drawing 2-2 at the end of normal time. Mr Jim Hunter, assistant commissioner for scouts, presented the trophy to the winning team of Gareth Wilkinson, Andrew Penrose, Richard Stocks, Ben Thomas and John Thomas, after the annual competition at Moor End High School. Longwood Scouts B won a losers final. Members of the winning team are pictured with colleagues from the Crosland Moor scout group's other team. 16th May 1985.15 of 31Linthwaite couple Albert and Gladys Heeley celebrated their golden wedding with a surprise holiday in Blackpool. The week-long trip for the pair who live in Manchester Road, was paid for by a family friend. Mr and Mrs Heeley, who were married at Emley Parish Church, have two children, five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. The couple, both aged 75, are members of Linthwaite Liberal Club. Both enjoy gardening and walking. Mr Heeley was a builder for most of his working life and retired from the old Colne Valley District Council as the builder responsible for council house maintenance. Mr Heeley was involved in the Normandy landings in the Second World War. 17th May 1985.16 of 31Moldgreen Working Men's Club members Mr and Mrs Harry and Doris Hirst celebrated their golden wedding on Saturday. And the couple's daughter made the trip for the family's party from Pakistan, where her husband works as a doctor. Mr and Mrs Hirst, of Longfield Avenue, Dalton, who have two granddaughters, first met at Sunday School meetings. Both were born in Lancashire but have lived in Huddersfield for 40 years. Mr Hirst, 77, worked as an engineer and Mrs Hirst, 70 worked at Thorpe Grange old people's home, Almondbury. Mr Hirst is a trustee of the working men's club and his wife is on the women's committee. She was crowned at the group's young people's annual anniversary and took over from retiring queen Paula Hardcastle. Music was by the Salvation Army bands of Mirfield and Batley and the singing and musical sections of the Batley Corps. Guests included Capt and Mrs F Smith, of the Batley Castle Salvation Army. 11th May 1985.21 of 31Paddles at the ready-these four young canoeists get set to take to the murky water of Huddersfield canal, under the watchful eye of race organiser Mr Peter Dawson. Thirty-eight scouts representing groups from all over West Yorkshire took part in the race from the historic lifting bridge behind Huddersfield Sports Centre to Leeds Road playing fields. Mr Dawson said the race as the first of its kind to be staged by local scouts and he hoped it would become an annual event. The West Yorkshire scouts canoeing adviser Mr Trevor Butler presented medals to the winning teams. Three members of the 4th Golcar scouts, David MacStrafick (11), Chris Robinson (13), and Howard Ramm (14) won gold in the team event. A gold medal also went to Richard Chapman, of the 1st Heckmondwike scouts in the 13-15 age-group, and Richard Carmichael, from the same age group, took the silver. The 16-plus age group silver went to Daniel Barston, of Huddersfield. 12th May 1985.22 of 31Seen with fourth-year student Nicola Hollings (second right) at Huddersfield Polytechnic are visiting sixth-formers (from left) Melissa Goddard, Linzi Ebbage and Lynne Ryan They are among 50 sixth-form girls from throughout the North of England who attended a one-day conference at the college on the theme of women into science and engineering. The conference was organised by the polytechnic's information officer, Mrs Catherine Owens. Participants were shown the college's science and engineering facilities, held discussions with polytechnic students and were able to undertake project work like the chemical preparation pictured. 16th May 1985.23 of 31Pedal power has earned a Huddersfield group five trophies. Scouts, venture scouts and cubs from the 11th Huddersfield (Holy Trinity) group raced against teams from 14 groups in a scout car competition at Stourbridge, West Midlands, Their hand-built cars won four races, the novice under 14 race, the novice race, the under 14 event and the Grand Prix, fro which they win a shield to keep and one which they hold for a year. The scouts have been taking part in scout car racing for four years. A pupil of Kirkburton Middle School, she was chosen at a special disco and will be crowned on June 15 Carnival Day. 21st May 198530 of 31Matthew Todd and Sharon Donaldson of St Aiden's School, Skelmanthorpe, were among 460 children from 15 Kirklees first schools who joined together for a festival of Music at Huddersfield Town Hall last night. The Mayor and Mayoress of Kirklees, Clr and Mrs Colin Walker, were guests at the concert organised by the Denby Dale and Kirkburton Area Schools Music Association. The youngsters presented a programme including choral music, recorder pieces and brass music and were conducted by Bretton Hall College tutor Mr Paul Mann. The annual concert followed a series of in-school rehearsals with Mr Mann, brass conductor Mrs Norman Dyson and accompanist Mrs Majorie Allott. 23rd May 1985.31 of 31
