Staff and parents joined forces to put on around 50 activities. Normal classroom lessons were cast aside as the pupils tried everything from crafts to water sports, caving, horse-riding and 10-pin bowling. Troops from the York-based King's Division (Infantry) Ð consisting of the Duke of Wellington's Regiment, the Prince of Wales Own (Yorkshire) and the Green Howards - put on displays and answered questions from curious youngsters. Lance Cpl Neil Malloy is pictured helping pupils on to the obstacle course. The competition attracted 130 clubs throughout the county and Shelley reached the final stages by beating Heckmondwike in the regional final. Shelley skipper Matthew Wood is pictured with the cup and his victorious team mates. 18th July 1991.3 of 33Scouting successes - 10-year-old Scouts Mark Gregory (right) and Mark Stanley have each received top awards. A gold arrow award has been presented to Mark Stanley, who lives at Beaumont Park and is a member of the 9th Huddersfield (Crosland Hill) pack. The Crosland Moor Junior School pupil had to learn about Baden Powell and carry out various activities to receive the award. Mark Gregory, a member of the 2nd Holme Valley pack, has received an adventure crest award. Mark, who lives at Holmfirth, had to go camping and hiking and learn painting before receiving the crest certificate and badge. 17th July 1991.4 of 33Please be seated - members of Shelley High School's crime prevention panel presented this teak garden seat to Shepley's Cherry Tree Court old people's home. It was bought with cash from a number of panel fund-raising events, including car-etching and an antiques valuation evening. Panel representatives David Haig (left), Marina Rose (centre, back) and Suzanne Wood (right) presented the seat, which is pictured being tried out by Cherry Tree Court residents and staff. The panel also spent £50 on anti-litter projects for the school grounds, including litter-picking sticks and rubbish bins. 17th July 1991.5 of 33Class of '91 ' Mrs Joan Smith, of Edgerton photographs her class at Paddock Junior Infant and Nursery School, with a camera given to her on her retirement after 26 years at the school. Mrs Smith, 52, also received a suitcase and a garden spade. She has three children who each attended the school while she was teaching. SPLASH - Sports and Police Leisure Activities for the Summer Holidays - is an activity scheme jointly organised by Kirklees and Crime Concern. Now in its third year it aims, through a number of sessions with team workers, to use sport to develop links between youths, the police and the leisure and recreation service. The first session is at Fartown Village Hall on Monday between 10am and 2pm. There will be a number of other venues throughout the Kirklees area. 23rd July 1991.7 of 33Let's go fly a kite - three-year-old Emma Plum (left) and her sister, four-year-old Elizabeth, were among high flyers from all over the North of England who converged at Salendine Nook High School for this year's Kirklees Kite Day. Around 2,000 kite-makers, flyers and enthusiasts flocked to the school to take par tin one of the highlights of Kirklees Summer Festival. The event began with an official flying display and there were workshops throughout the afternoon where people could make their own kites and bunting with Huddersfield banner-making experts Bannerworks. There was added entertainment from Holme Band and a German folk group; juggling and circus skills from The Winder Boys and street theatre from the Whalley Range All Stars. There was also a variety of side stalls and arts and crafts. The event is organised by Huddersfield kite day committee in conjunction with Kirklees Cultural Services and Bannerworks. 21st July 1991.8 of 33Food glorious food - Almondbury High School dinner ladies Doreen Bower (centre) and Brenda Ward have retired after dishing up 50 years of school dinners between them. Mrs Bower, of Almondbury, has worked for 27 years at the school and received a radio cassette from colleagues to mark her retirement. Mrs Ward, of Waterloo, has worked at the school for 23 years and received two pieces of china. Both women also received engraved bud vases. They are pictured receiving their gifts and bouquets from head teacher Ivor Rees. 19th July 1991.9 of 33Trucking to victory - four local lorry drivers have won places in a national competition. The trophies on display were picked up in the South and West Yorkshire heats of the Shell Lorry Driver of the Year competition. And the drivers - all few Brewliners, of Leeds Road, Huddersfield - will go on to the national final at Telford, Shropshire in September. Among the prizes won by the Brewliners team were first and second prizes in the 40ft and over articulated section, the team award and first place in the Highway Code section. John, who lives at Blakehall Drive, Mirfield, and is a member of the 8th Mirfield (St Mary's) pack, has received the Chief Scout's Commendation for Meritorious Conduct. The Mirfield High School pupil suffers from diabetes but never allows it to be a handicap or hinder his Scouting activities. Scouting county commissioner Mr John Airth said: 'It is nice when people like John receive recognition because of the example they set to other Scouts.' John's older sister Helen has just been selected to represent the North East of England Guides in Hong Kong. 15th July 1991.11 of 33Best of friends É 10-year-old Samantha Stevens took a shine to Seamus the donkey at Honley High School's summer fair. The annual fair included a donkey derby, with seven races sponsored by local companies. The final race was started by Colne Valley MP Graham Riddick, who then presented race prizes. The event, with a variety of stalls, games and sideshows, was also attended by the Deputy Mayor and Mayoress of Kirklees, Clr Mervyn and Mrs Lyn Drayton. Members of the unit washed cars in the car park at Moldgreen United Reformed Church to raise the money, which was boosted by funds from the local Brownie pack, which sold cakes at Ravensknowle Gala. 12th July 1991.14 of 33Coat of many colours É author Bill Forde joined pupils of Nields Junior and Infant School, Slaithwaite - including Lindsay Smith, Craig Senior and Ben Jackson - for their annual Rainbow Day. Pupils shed their school uniforms and donned colourful fancy dress and make-up for the day Ð and paid 30p to school funds for the privilege. Mr Forde gave copies of his book, Douglas the Dragon, to children who were awarded prizes for their costumes. 12th July 1991.15 of 33Roof repairs at the English Martyrs RC Church, Dalton, come a step nearer as Fr John Ruttledge accepts a £550 contribution from youngsters who completed a 10-mile sponsored walk to raise cash for the church roof appeal. Organised by dance teacher Mrs Nora Osgerby, about 40 children and their parents took part in the canal walk from Longwood to Marsden. The youngsters also presented Fr Ruttledge with a cheque for £65, raised by a dancing competition, which is to go to the Diocesan Welfare SocietyÕs children's home in Leeds. 9th July 1991.16 of 33Talented young artist Hannah Alden is to have her work displayed in a national exhibition. The 13-year-old Kirkburton girl has been shortlisted for the Cadbury's National Exhibition of Children's Art. Her self-portrait pencil drawing will go on show with other work when the exhibition is launched at the Barbican Centre in London on November 28. Hannah, who attends Kirkburton Middle School and is due to start at Shelley High in September, saw the competition advertised in Huddersfield Children's Library. She received a certificate to mark her success in the competition. The contest, which is sponsored by the sweet giants, attracted 40,000 entries this year. 11th July 1991.17 of 33An Upperthong couple have celebrated their golden wedding. Fred and Kathleen Kenworthy, of Towngate, met at a Christmas Eve dance and were married at St John's Parish Church, Upperthong. Mr Kenworthy, 81, serviced with the Royal Engineers during the Second World War. He was a tailor before joining the Army and later worked at David Brown's Park Works for 20 years as a gear cutter. Mrs Kenworthy, 73, worked in textiles before the war. Mr Kenworthy enjoys competitions and music, especially brass bands. Mrs Kenworthy enjoys ballet. The couple have one son and two grandchildren. They celebrated with a meal for family and friends. 11th July 1991.18 of 33A couple who met on the dance floor at the old Labour Rooms, Fitzwilliam Street, have celebrated 50 years of marriage. Mrs Leslie Norris, 74, and his wife Hilda, 73, both come from Lowerhouses. Mr Norris worked at David Brown's, Lockwood, for 40 years and captained the works cricket team. His wife worked for Brook Motors. The couple, who live at Fernside Avenue, Almondbury, celebrated with a party at Almondbury Cricket Club, where Mr Norris is a supporter. 11th July 1991.19 of 33Young Jason Scarfe holds a cheque for £830, raised by seven regulars at Dalton's Grove pub during a 12-hour pool marathon. The money has been given to Mascot, the charity which sends sick children on dream holidays. Professional England pool player Chris Little visited the pub to accept the cheque on behalf of the charity. The school has been awarded a third prize in a Chartered Institute of Building competition for the house it built in the school grounds. Schools throughout the region entered the competition, which aimed to find building projects which suited their environment. 8th July 1991.23 of 33A major prize - Nine-year-old Thomas Wilson has won a top award in the Royal Mail's North-East region Young Letter WritersÕ competition. His letter to Prime Minister John Major on the theme of banning smoking so impressed judges that he was awarded £100 as winner of the eight-10-years age group. The Mirfield youngster also won £100 for his school, Battyeford Middle. Thomas now goes forward to the national competition against entrants from nine other regions. More than 32,000 North-Eastern youngsters entered the competition. 8th July 1991.24 of 33A cheque for £800 was presented to Mike Emery, chairman of Leeds Candlelighters Committee, when he opened Golcar Parish Church garden party. The money was raised at a Forties and Fifties nostalgia evening at Colne Valley Leisure Centre. It was organised by Peter and Susan Kain, of Golcar and Mrs Kain's mother, Mrs Shirley Kendall (third left), who presented the cheque. Mr and Mrs Kain ar members of the Huddersfield branch of Candlelighters and their daughter, Samantha, has received treatment for leukaemia at the Leeds hospitals which treat children suffering from cancer. Mr Emery was introduced by the Vicar, the Re Martyn Crompton. Music was by Arian Sound, Mr Michael Thewlis auctioned gifts from people in the parish and there were stalls, games, a bouncing castle and tea. In the evening there was a barbecue and music by Fartown High School Steel Band. 6th July 1991.25 of 33Brighouse High School has been officially opened after completion of a final £5m phase to the library. Long-serving Brighouse councillor Mrs Emma Hions, a former governor, officially opened the school by unveiling a plaque in the entrance hall. Calderdale Mayor Clr Tom McElroy attended. Top British gymnasts including local star Craig Lowther performed in the sports hall while visitors had the opportunity to peruse the premises. Improvements to the school include a new sports complex and assembly hall and rooms for home economics, music, art, technology, craft design and school staff. The library has been created from the former annexe hall and kitchen and features computers, offices and classrooms. Children's book illustrator Mr Anthony Browne opened the new library and signed autographs during a visit to the school. A collection of Russian dancers entertained as part of an arts festival. 6th July 1991.26 of 33Oyez, oyez The Rector of Thornhill, the Rev Nicholas Webb, reads out a royal charter at Thornhill. Villagers converged at Thornhills medieval cross at the weekend for the fourth medieval market celebrations. The charity event, organised by Thornhill Womens Institute, marks the granting of a charter in 1321 to the lord of the manor, Sir John De Thornhill, by King Edward 11. The charter granted permission for a market each week and for a four-day fair in July. Children of Thornhill junior and Infant School made a replica of a memorial at The Cross an area in the centre of the village.A band of strolling players provided musical entertainment during the afternoon. 6th July 1991.27 of 33All together now - supplying the music for a sing-a-long before setting off for Rhyl is 76-year-old Leslie Hudson, of Lepton, with members of the Huddersfield and District Army VeteransÕ Association. Two coaches of veterans enjoyed the annual outing which included a trip to Ellesmere Port Boat Museum, lunch and high tea. 5th July 1991.28 of 33Huddersfield Technical College students Richard Beaumont (left) and Neil Hirst are building a successful future for themselves. They defeated entrants from all over Yorkshire and Humberside to gain the best overall mark in the Guild of Bricklayers' regional competition at Hull. Richard and Neil, who also won a craft certificate competition, are pictured with their certificates and awards. 4th July 1991.29 of 33Almondbury High School has been thanked for its efforts to forge links with the local community. The school helped organise a successful five-a-side football competition at the Almondbury South Residents' Association's recent summer gala. In return the association has now presented the school with £20 to buy a trophy, which will be awarded to pupils for outstanding achievements. The association's chairwoman, Mrs Mary Potts (right), is pictured handing the cheque to headmaster Mr Ivor Rees. The group's 50 members were joined by around 100 other guests from neighbouring unions for the service and supper, which included a birthday cake. A former Linthwaite vicar, the Rev Lawrence Wood, now vicar at Liversedge, addressed the service and Mr Roger Haigh was the reader. The union's enrolling member, Mrs Elaine Livesey, is pictured (front) with other celebrating members. 2nd July 1991.31 of 33Mrs Jane Bailey, of Moorlands Crescent, Outlane, has presented this wall hanging to Outlane Infants' School. Mrs Bailey designed and made the wall hanging, called Life Cycles, as part of her City and Guilds embroidery course. She presented it to the school, where her daughter is a pupil, at a special assembly. She is pictured with the wall hanging, receiving a thank-you card from pupils. 15th July 1991.32 of 33Carry on camping - Early risers at Huddersfield South West District annual Cub camp. More than 60 Cubs and their leaders took part in the camp at Whitley Beaumont camp site, Lepton. Camp fire was led by Stephen Sykes, group Scout leader at Golcar, and lay preacher Geoff Wilson led the Scouts' own service. The event was organised by Nigel Kain and Bronwen Brooke, District Cub Leaders.
