1Vegetables – check stored vegetables and remove any that have rotted. Finish off any serious ground cultivations before the soil gets too wet, adding organic matter as necessary. Support tall brassicas such as sprouts and broccoli with canes. Clear out and wash glasshouses, cold frames and polythene structures using a garden cleaning product such as Jeyes Fluid – read instructions carefully beforehand.

2Fruit – check stored fruit and remove any that have rotted. Prune apples and pears once the last fruits have been harvested, removing thin, weak and badly positioned branches and taking out branches from the centre of trees to allow light and air in. Prune back any new wood to three or four buds. Put grease bands around the trunks to help reduce winter moth infestations.
