1 Sow some salad leaves in pots on a sunny windowsill or in a cool glasshouse to fill the gap between now and when you can begin to grow them outdoors – look out for seeds of land cress, spinach, rocket, lettuce, mizuna, pak choi, beet, sorrel and corn salad. Sow some spinach and lettuce in cells for planting outdoors in a month. Try a few small trays of mustard, cress, rocket, red cabbage and radish for eating as seedlings, sprinkled on salads and stir fries to give them a sharpness.

2 Finish planting any bare-rooted fruit trees, canes and bushes over the next week or two, ensuring that you provide them with well-prepared ground as they are likely to be in that position for a good number of years. Prune out one or two older, more spindly pieces of growth from blueberries now before they start into new growth.
