1Harvest early planted container grown potatoes now and look out for new seed potatoes in garden centres to be prepared for late August planting – these can be taken under glass in late September for a crop of new potatoes at Christmas. Lift and dry autumn planted onions and garlic. Check courgettes and cucumbers for male flowers and remove them – no embryo fruit behind the petals. Keep sweet corn well watered if you can. Sow peas, carrots and spinach in the land that has been cleared of onions. Harvest beans daily to help more to form and irrigate well.
2 Continue to train new canes of loganberries, tayberries and blackberries in the right direction and prune out old fruiting canes once the last fruits have been harvested. Tie in canes of autumn fruiting raspberries, cutting out weak and badly placed canes as you do so.
