1 Prop up your plants – now that the spring garden has got underway properly, lots of our summer herbaceous perennials are growing fast and, after the long, hard winter, the growth is soft and succulent. It is going to need supporting with birch twigs, garden canes or ring supports to avoid it flopping over and breaking. It is also likely to be a little more prone to slug and snail damage, depending on how many of them got through the winter, so take whatever precautions you would normally do, organic or otherwise.

2 There is still time to lift and divide some of the summer flowering herbaceous perennials and it is worth visiting garden centres and nurseries to choose one or two new ones to add some new colour to your summer garden.
