Many of us resolve to get in shape in the New Year — or at least shed those post-Christmas pounds.

After weeks of festive parties, a calorific Christmas lunch and all that chocolate, it's probably a good idea to get off the sofa and get active this January.

But you don't have to confine yourself to the gym to get some exercise.

Huddersfield offers some great scenic locations for getting fit and blowing away the winter cobwebs — and even better, you can dodge expensive gym fees and use them for free!

Here's five ways to get fit in Huddersfield:

  1. Climb Castle Hill

Slog up Castle Hill and not only will you burn some calories, you'll also be rewarded with amazing views of Huddersfield. Walk up the steep paths to the summit, some 997 feet above sea level, and tackle the stairs up to Victoria Tower. You never know, after a few walks you might be running up the stairs like Rocky!
  2. Get active on the Greenway

Harness pedal power to get in shape and take in some of the Calder Valley's spectacular views at the same time on the Calder Valley Greenway. The four-mile, largely rural route connects Huddersfield and Dewsbury via woodland, farmland and riverside paths.
  3. Take on Holme Moss
Tour de France riders on the climb to the summit of Holme Moss.

This is certainly not a cycling course for beginners, but with some training, you may be able to tackle the punishing Holme Moss climb. The Tour de France route included a race to its summit — if you really want to challenge yourself, see if you can follow in the footsteps of Le Tour and make it to the top. Phew!
  4. Try the Huddersfield Parkrun
