Twenty-three years ago Will and Kath Norris bought a family home on Butterley Lane, New Mill, which combined stunning countryside with the nearby amenities of Holmfirth.

For IT business owner Will, the purchase was an obvious one.

He said: “The house is close to everything but we still get peace, tranquility and privacy. We have three children, and as they have grown up, we’ve known that the time would come when we would move.

“Two of my children have now fully left home and the third is in their fifth year of a six year medicine degree, so we always had a vision that once the children had fledged, the size of the house would be more suitable for a growing family and that we would probably relocate to the Lake District.”

With that in mind, the family have worked hard to keep the property modern, even extending the home to accommodate their growing brood.

“We extended after about eight years,” said Mr Norris.

“We thought we could do with more space but we liked the house so much we decided we’d rather extend it than look elsewhere.”

Additionally, the couple have replaced the old staircase with stunning oak balustrades, as well as updating the floors with stylish carpets and solid oak boards and renovating the kitchen to include modern wall and base units, part tiled walls, a double glazed window to the rear and a stable style door to the side elevation.

Mr Norris said: “I think the only thing that remains of the original house now is the corner slate fireplace.

“We’ve modernised the house but made sure it’s still in keeping with the area. It’s effectively been totally renovated.”

The detached residence boasts five good size bedrooms, one of which benefits from an en-suite.

Downstairs is a large lounge, generous breakfast kitchen and a dining room, while outside the home continues to impress with a substantial garden.

Mr Norris said: “About 14 years ago there was an option for the residents to buy a package of land from the adjacent open fields.

“It meant we were able to extend our garden and probably double the size of it. It’s big enough now that you could put a badminton court or a swimming pool in there.”

The house also benefits from being in the catchment area for Holmfirth High School and Greenhead College.

The Norris family are testament to just how impressive the school and college are: “Without wishing to blow our own trumpet, my eldest daughter went on to Oxford University, she’s now a sports lawyer in Manchester. My son is now a dentist and my youngest daughter also went to Oxford and she’s currently in her fifth year of a medicine degree at Imperial.

“The schools and education facilities in the area are absolutely top notch.”

As well as making an ideal family home, the New Mill property has also made a great base for Mr Norris’ IT management support business for the last 15 years.

Part of the extension is used as an office, making this an ideal move for someone who is looking to work or build a business from home.

“It ticks all the boxes really and it will take some matching in the Lakes,” said Mr Norris.
