The idea is simple. No alcohol for all of January. A 31-day booze free zone.

So, to start 2015 off with a good old fashioned health kick, I've decided to take the Dry January challenge — and raise money for Alcohol Concern while I'm at it.

I'm sure I'm not the only one that's (over)indulged in festive tipple or two over the last week.

There's always an opportunity, isn't there? Whether it's warming up with a mulled wine in a pub after a busy day's Christmas shopping, the booze-fulled Christmas work parties, bucks fizz on Christmas morning or wine with Christmas lunch.

Then of course there's New Year's Eve, full of champagne and a house party 'punch' where the ingredients (and quantities) are a bit of a mystery.

When you rack up your alcoholic units for the Christmas period, a month off the sauce suddenly seems like a very good idea.

There's lots of enticing benefits, too, like nicer hair, clearer skin and shedding a few of those post-Christmas pounds.

Not to mention the financial gains — think what you could save on expensive rounds, taxi fares and kebabs!

I'm sure after a busy day at work I'll still fancy a nice glass of Merlot, but I also want to prove to myself I can say no to a drink.

Luckily I'll probably spend most of January hibernating with box sets, too skint to go out every weekend, like most of the country.

But I do have one night out on the calendar, and it will be interesting to see how I fare when those around me will be indulging in a sambuca (or three).

I've taken the plunge and signed up to Dry January — and set up a JustGiving fundraising page for Alcohol Concern. Any donations will be gratefully recieved.

I'll be keeping a weekly diary on my progress for Examiner.co.uk — so stay tuned to see how I cope swapping my Coors Light for a cup of tea.
