A string of films, lectures and musical performances are to be held in Huddersfield in the run up to International Woman’s Day on Saturday March 8.

Organised by Huddersfield charity WomenCentre, a packed programme of events kicks off on Wednesday March 5.

WomenCentre spokeswoman Kelly Lockwood said: “International Women’s Day is celebrated in many countries around the world. It is a day when women are recognised for their achievements without regard to divisions, whether national, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic or political.

“It is an occasion for looking back on past struggles and accomplishments, and more importantly, for looking ahead to the untapped potential and opportunities that await future generations of women.”

This is the second year the event has been hosted in Huddersfield and is growing in momentum. This year’s event will also include a first performance of a new piece of poetry by Alison Lock, drawn from the words of many women in our community.

Highlights of the celebrations include the screening of films which tell women’s extraodinary stories on Wednesday at the WomenCentre (The Loft), Lord Street, Huddersfield from 12.00 – 7.30 pm.

On Thursday events will get more lively with Kora music and stories from Holly Marland at Coffee Evolution, Church Street, Huddersfield at 6pm.

Friday’s programme starts over to Huddersfield Universities Creative Arts Building, (11.15am – 12.45pm) where Dr Lisa Colton (Director of the Centre for the Study of Music, Gender and Identity, University of Huddersfield) explores some of the key women in music history, examining their reputations, creative personalities and musical legacy, from medieval nuns to the present day.

And in the evening (Friday) activities culminate with a gig at Bar 1:22 in the town centre will also raise funds for the WomenCentre.
