From outside, this week’s Our House at Shelley has the look of a fairy tale castle.

Situated in Near Bank, the house is one of a pair of properties built with a distinctive tower at the front — which you can just imagine fairytale character Rapunzel living in. Stuck in a tower, the Brothers Grimm character was asked to let down her golden hair so an evil witch could climb up to visit her.

Property owner Nina Brown, who has lived at the house since it was built 12 years ago, says she has always called her home ‘the Rapunzel house’.

“Many people, especially walkers, stop to look at the house, and even take photos, because it is so unusual. The tower makes it very distinctive. It certainly has great kerb appeal,’’ she said.

Nina and her two daughters, Roxann and Christie Asquith, are now looking to downsize from the five-bedroom house but want to stay in or near the village of Shelley.

“It’s a lovely village with lots going on. There’s a real community feel and we are near to good schools, a garden centre and other amenities, yet on the edge of beautiful countryside.’’

The south-facing Stonewood House is perched on the hillside in Near Bank, which means it has fabulous panoramic views.

Approached by a paved driveway, the main entrance is via spiral stairs which lead the visitor into a hallway, which is right in the centre of the tower.

Laid out over three floors, this house is very spacious with something different around every corner.

Entry is via the middle floor into a hallway, which leads through into a spacious lounge and conservatory that both take full advantage of the views. The lounge has a feature fireplace and a tumbled limestone floor, which continues through into the conservatory. Both these two rooms have underfloor heating.

Also on this floor is a utility room along with a large kitchen with a central island, and dining room, which leads out through French doors on to a balcony that is ideal for breakfast or sitting in the evening sun.

Moving to the upper floor, the house has four bedrooms and the house bathroom. The master bedroom has a very contemporary en-suite. There are two further double bedrooms and one single.

The house bathroom is particularly attractive as it sits at the top of the circular tower, has a spa bath and three individual windows.

Just when you think you have seen all this house, remember, there is also a lower floor, which could be made into a separate annex with its own entrance.

Originally Nina used this as her office for her business, 1 Shot Exhibitions, but she has since relocated to nearby Barncliffe Mills.

She said: “I can see my office from the house but originally we all worked downstairs.’’

Today the lower floor is set up as a large guest bedroom with dressing room and en-suite wet room. This could easily be converted into a separate living area for an elderly relative or a teenager. There is a tiered garden, which includes a lawned area, a pond and waterfall, a wishing well, woodland and various seating areas. There is also a double garage and the large drive can accommodate several cars.

This is a very attractive and unusual house with fabulous views and close proximity to local amenities. It is ideal for a larger family and for someone who appreciates a house which is a bit different.
