They beat off tough competition to be crowned as victors in the Yorkshire Battle of the Bands contest, despite only having been together for seven months.

It was a great boost to Huddersfield four-piece, The Zillaz, who are looking forward to a busy few months as they take on new gig dates and work on their first album.

Formed last October, singer Ben Heneghan, guitarist Paul Ainley, bass player Jim Stevenson and drummer John Longson are winning over crowds left, right and centre with their refreshing mix of funk and indie rock.

Taking influence from their diverse music backgrounds, which also includes garage and RnB, they are keen to push boundaries and mix sounds to get fans dancing and breathe new life into established genres.

They’ve just released their first EP, Showa and are now working on a 13-track album which they hope to announce later this year.

John said: “Winning the battle of the bands was fantastic and we were really shocked when they announced us.

“I think that we’ve come a long way since we formed, although it wasn’t that long ago, and I hope that people will be able to hear the difference in our sound when we release our album.”

Their next gigs will be at Honley Cricket Ground on July 5 and Victoria Park, Meltham, on July 12.
