In the year that the Queen had her  coronation and Sir Edmund  Hilary conquered Everest, Huddersfield were also made headlines with a 15-10 Challenge Cup  final win over St Helens at  Wembley.

For fans unable to make the  trip to London from Yorkshire and  Lancashire the only way of staying in  touch with the action was to listen to the  BBC’s Home Service.

The Rugby League were still dubious of  the merits of television and the effect it  may have on gate receipts and banned any  television coverage of the final.

They needn’t have worried with a gate  of 89,588 producing then record receipts  of £30,865, twelve shillings and three  pence.
