IT was December 1991 and Capt Smirk and the crew of the Starship Raffleprize featured in Golcar Primary School’s Christmas production.

Even though Mirfield-born Patrick Stewart – now chancellor of Huddersfield University – had taken the helm of the TV starship Enterprise by 1991, the original 1960s series of Star Trek featuring William Shatner as Capt James T Kirk and Leonard Nimoy as Mr Spock remained hugely popular.

Star Trek (The Nativity), which spoofed the series, was just part of the Golcar production.

Around 80 children from the Manor Road school took part in the two nightly performances for parents and friends.

It also featured Daniel Jazz, a musical version of the Old Testament story of Daniel and the Lions’ Den.
