I have been officially told off for Christmas by 92-year-old Mrs Lilian Harrison.

Lilian writes: “I really enjoy reading your column but this morning you really put me off my breakfast.”

My crime was suggesting the tradition of sending Christmas cards could die out because of the internet, texts and, mostly, the price of postage.

“No Christmas cards? No sparkle, robins, snow scenes, nativity, wise men, Santa – how can you see these on the internet?

“Although I’m 92-years-old and do have an iPad I love to see cards on every surface, stuck on doors and walls. Also to hear the letter box click. As for the price of stamps, I know it’s a bit expensive but – once a year? People spend pounds on food, lots of it thrown away.

”Come on, Denis. Don’t be such a Scrooge. Buy a stamp.”

Sorry, Lilian,I shall try and do better.
