Scottish people will vote in September whether or not they want their country to be independent or remain part of the United Kingdom.

To be honest, I have been ambivalent about the outcome.

Then I saw the campaign poster for the Yorkshire Independence Party and thought again. Scotland’s population at the 2011 census was 5,295,000. And they have a referendum on independence.

Yorkshire’s population was 5,284,000, just 11,000 difference. Why can’t we have one?

That is the message from the YIP that claims to be the only Party that can: “Grapple with the problems of national debt, health care and the economy while at the same time offering free Yorkshire puddings to the over 65s and making whippet racing and coal carrying an Olympic sport.”

In a Republic of Greater Yorkshire, they would also remove VAT for flat caps and impose tariff barriers on southern beer and Lancashire hot pot, return to lbs, shillings and halfpenny bits and make Yorkshire a compulsory second language in schools. Sithee.

They are not worried whether the European Union would accept Yorkshire as a breakaway country as a far more controversial problem would be border and customs control with Lancashire.

I’ve been advocating Yorkshire independence for years. This is a movement

I can support. Where do I join?
