Mums are worth £172,000 a year.

This is according to an Interflora survey in the week leading up to Mother’s Day on Sunday.

They reckoned your average mum works 119 hours a week which makes a husband doing a normal nine till five job look distinctly lazy even though he may need the occasional hour or two of wind-down time in the pub after work and collapse on the couch in front of the TV when he finally gets home.

“Bring us a beer, love. I’m jiggered.”

The researchers suggested mum, meanwhile, didn’t have just one job as a mother, but also acted as housekeeper, chef, teacher, psychologist, entertainer, personal shopper, lawyer, chauffeur and nanny.

They worked out how long she spent doing each job, multiplied the time by the hourly rates and came to the grand total of £172,000.

This is £30,000 more than the Prime Minister’s salary, but then I think most mums could do a better job if they took up residence in Number 10.

My wife Maria gave up her career as secretary to an accountant to look after our first daughter Siobhan and remained a stay-at-home mum when Sian came along eight years later.

That’s 24 years until Sian became 16 for which she received no wages. By my calculation, she’s owed £4,128,000 in back pay.

A rebate would be better than saying it with flowers. Where does she apply?
