THIS great photograph captures a group of youngsters just about to set off for the seaside.

The year is 1951 and the pupils from Linthwaite Council School were heading to the Bridlington aboard a coach from local firm Hanson.

Colin Perry from Marsden was 12 at the time and recalls: “The man in the black trilby hat was our headmaster Mr Harry Boothroyd who had served in the RAF – something he kept reminding us.

“Right at the back of the photograph standing next to the wall (second from right) is Harold Pearson, a fruit and vegetable trader who later became involved in Huddersfield Market Traders Association.”

Mr Perry left the school at the age of 15 and then worked as an engineer in Huddersfield for some big names, including David Brown Tractors and Sellers Engineers.

He is married to Brenda and the couple have a daughter, Gillian, two sons Richard and Nigel and three grandchildren, Sam, 15, Tom, 13 and 11-year-old Joseph.
