Examiner nostalgia: People making the news in Huddersfield in 1990

Best feet forward ... Meltham Town Council chairman Mrs Shirley Watson and pupils of the town's Church of England Junior and Infant School tried out the new zebra crossing at Holmfirth Road in November 1990.

Clr Watson said the crossing, outside what was then Lodge's supermarket, was much needed.

She said: "It is a lot safer now. Cars used to park on the yellow lines along that stretch of road, but now there is nothing to block the view."

Pupils of the junior school at Holmfirth Road had carried out a project a few years earlier on why and where a crossing was needed.

It was with their help that the crossing was built, added Clr Watson.
