Studying the route they were to take for a sponsored cycle ride in 1991 were Owen Apsinall, Richard Saville and Peter Dawson.

The trio, who were all 15 and pupils at Fartown High School, were raising money to buy cooking equipment for the 15th Huddersfield B Scout troop of which Richard, of Sheepridge, was a member.

They were planning to cycle to Scarborough on Saturday October 19, 1991, to spend two days in the town before making the 76-mile return journey the following Tuesday.

All keen cyclists, they were raising money through sponsorship to buy a cooking stove for camping expeditions.
