The two who collected most sponsorship money were Joanne (£8.10) and Louise Lloyd. 25th February 1985.1 of 25Student hairdressers Jackie Ellis and Sandra Noicely have reached the finals of a national hairstyling competition. Both girls are day release students at Huddersfield Technical College and will take part in the finals at Blackpool on March 18 of the competition organised for technical colleges by the Association of Hairdressing Teaches. Jackie (16) of Sheepridge, and Sandra (19), of Springwood qualified in the regional final at Newcastle. Jackie, who works at Creation Unisex Hairstyles in King Street, is employed on a Youth Training Scheme, and is indentured to the salon. She is competing in the apprentice day style class. Sandra, who works at Rose Marie, Blacker Road, Birkby, will compete in the fashion-styling class. Jackie recently won a £50 cheque, two trophies and a diploma when she won the apprentice day style class in a Leeds competition. 13th February 1985.2 of 25Battyeford Middle School are well on their way to a successful defence of their Dunlop National Schools Table Tennis Under 13 title. The team of Nick Ryder, Julian Ryder, Kevan Sangster and Andrew Payne won the North Regional final and now meet the teams from the South-East, Midlands and West in the finals at Matlock (Derbyshire) on Saturday, March 23. In the North final they beat Ian Ramsey (Cleveland) 6-2, Bishop Rawstone (Lancs) 6-2 and Gosforth (Derby) 5-8. The visit was part of a programme to give the children experience of various sights, sounds and smells. The children, aged between three and 14, were shown round the bus station by Metro staff and refreshments were laid on in the station cafe. 12th February 1985.4 of 25Robert McCallum (left) of the Cliffe-Tyke Venture Unit, Birchencliffe, presents a lifeboat-shaped £50 cheque to Mrs Joyce Bradbury, chairman of the Huddersfield branch of the Royal National Lifeboat Institute Luncheon Club. Other Venture Scout members look on. The money was raised by pedalling 70 miles on an exercise bike. The annual competition is organised by Kirklees Junior Chamber of Commerce and this year's semi-finalists were Honley High School, All Saints, St John Fisher School (Dewsbury) and Royds Hall High School. In the final at Honley High School, All Saints beat Royds Hall. They now go forward to a Yorkshire regional final.14th February 1985.8 of 25Mrs Eileen Slater, social worker for the Huddersfield and District Council of Churches, received a cheque from Rina Mukherjee and children of the Sia-Baba Hindu sect. Part of the money was raised by children who did a sponsored walk and the cheque was presented at the celebration of the Shiva Ratri Festival. The council of churches will use the money to give deprived children a holiday.18th February 1985.9 of 25Christopher Wenzel and other Huddersfield Unit Sea Cadets get acquainted with Miss Joan Donnelly's guide dog, Elly. As part of a project covering the Eastern are of the Sea Cadet Corps, the Huddersfield cadets are helping to raise money to buy a guide dog for a young blind person. Miss Donnelly, of Waterloo, official speaker for the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association, visited the unit with Elly to give the cadets advice and the chance to see a dog at work. The cadets have already raised £16. 18th February 1985.10 of 25A demonstration of flower arranging boosted funds for the Newsome-based Northern Lights Drum and Bugle Corps. The demonstration of silk and real flower arranging was given at Newsome Church Hall by Mrs Joan Walters (right), chairman of Huddersfield Flower Club and organised by parents of band members. Also pictured are Mrs Christine Garside (left) and Mrs Kay Sharp, uniform director. Guests paid 25p to see the demonstration and enjoy coffee and biscuits. All 22 members of the company made good a Christmas promise by knitting the woollens, helped by schools meals staff at Lepton Middle School. Guide leader Mrs M Smith decided the girls would learn more from the project than by donating money to the famine victims. 6th February 1985.16 of 25Tiny Tia Pinnock-Hamilton toddled five miles to help raise funds for famine relief in Ethiopia. Four-year-old Tia, joined a pack of sponsored walkers who trekked from Huddersfield to Bradford and back to raise £767. 5th February 1985.17 of 25Scouts from Lepton and Crosland Moor ready to start one of the tests during a winter competition at Moor End High School. Sixteen teams from throughout the scout's three Huddersfield districts took part in the competition, which included an inspection and tests on map and compass work, law and promise, local knowledge, scouting history, first aid, clouds and weather, highway code and country code. 9th February 1985.18 of 25Highburton Guides are pictured with home made sweets at a coffee morning which raised £110 for guide funds. The event at the village hall also featured stalls, including tombola, books and cakes. Jonathan Sheard and John Eccles are pictured battling it out in a cub's chess competition. Thirteen teams from throughout the scouting movement's Huddersfield South West district took part in the competition in the schoolroom at Marsden United Church. 9th February 1985.19 of 25Eleven-year-old Ayshea Munsi as 'Oliver' with the other workhouse boys during a production at Royds Hall High School. She is one of two 'Olivers' for this annual school production. On alternate nights the role is played by Yvonne Drury. 12th February 1985.20 of 25Milnsbridge Central YMCA are struggling near the foot of Division II but they proved tough opposition for promotion chasing Brook Motors for the second time on Saturday. Motors eventually gained a 3-0 success to add to their 1-0 victory at Laund Hill earlier in the season.
