Among them was 10 year old Nicola Cross and poodle Trixie with her friend, Jennifer Hall. For the more serious dog owners there were pedigree, obedience and junior handling classes and for those without a canine chum a pet show. The show is organized by the West Yorkshire branch of Pro Dogs, a charity aiming to promote responsible dog ownership, and the children's pet show is run by Kirklees Leisure Services. 3rd August 1985.1 of 17Three winners of Keep Britain Tidy competitions were rewarded for the litter free ideas when they visited Huddersfield fire station. 12 year old Clair Bulmer, of Almondbury, won a competition to "name the bin" run by the group at Almondbury scouts gala day. Paul Chirgwin, 11, of Almondbury, won a slogan competition organized by the Keep Britain Tidy group at the same event. Both youngsters were presented with plaques. Another winner was Jonathan McAllister, 13, of Honley, who was presented with a football signed by Huddersfield Town football - the prize in a similar competition run run during the mayor's parade. The children were given a guided tour of the fire station by firemen from white watch, along with parents and previous competition winners. The Centre's Jungle Bus and equipment is being taken out to areas where there is no play provisions for children in the school holidays. The service began in the middle of July and arrangements have been made to take the Jungle Bus to other parts of the town. "Play days" off if it's safer are funded by the Huddersfield Cinderella Society. 19th August 1985.3 of 17Librarian Mrs. Enid Blackburn reads to some of the children who attended a story time event at Slaithwaithe library. "Seaside holiday" was the theme of the event, organized by Kirklees Leisure Services to encourage children to take more interest in books. Attractions included games, singing and dancing. Story times have also been held at libraries including Golcar, Milnsbridge and Linthwaite. 16th August 1985.4 of 17More than 30 young golf fanatics took part in a fun day for beginners at Marsden yesterday. The event, which also includes games and refreshments, was held in Larch Road, Paddock, at the home of Catherine and her sister, Helen. The two youngsters and their friends hold the event annually. Captains Andrew Bissett (Upperthong) and Russell Evans (Lindley) are pictured with their teams before the under twelves six a side soccer final which Lindley won and a corner count back following a 2-2 draw. Milnsbridge YMCA "A" won the under fourteens cup and Wasp Nest were senior champions. 10th August 1985.9 of 17Some 90 children ready to set off on a trip to Lightwater Valley. The event was organized by Cambridge road baths and Huddersfield sports centre, and as part of the annual summer programme run by Kirklees Leisure services indoor division. A model making competition and BMX demonstrations are also planned. 7th August 1985.10 of 17Balloon race winner Nina Lockwood, of the 73rd Huddersfield Moldgreen brownies, has a boat to thank for winning Halifax building society's balloon race. Nina, who's balloon was found by a boat, 12 miles off Hornsey in the North Sea, received a £5.00 prize from Mr. Bill McGeorge, assistant manager of the society's Ramsden street branch in Huddersfield. The £2.00 winners, whose balloons landed mainly in the Hull area, are (from left) Cheryl Frith-Clarkson, of Dalton; Danielle Graham, of the 63rd East District brownies; Janet Bennison, of Salendine Nook; Ruth Bostock, of Edgerton, and Lucy Priestley, of Ainley top. The circus came to town yesterday, at least it seemed so when clowns, tightrope walkers and flying trapeze artists turned up at Colne Valley High School. But they were, in fact, children in disguise for a circus day. Some 100 youngsters took part, and Rowena Smith (left) is seen casting a spell on some of them. They are (from left) Lyndsey Scarhill, Vicky Secker, Heather Owen and Louise Foley. Two real circus acts also attended the event organized by Linthwaithe Summer play scheme. Pat Birch, from Bradford, and her performing dogs entertained the children and Pickles the clown made an appearance. 7th August 1985.13 of 17These youngsters decided take the dogs for a walk-for cash. A dozen youngsters took part in New Mill Sunday School's sponsored dog walk-and with them was the Vicar, the Rev. Raymond Wainwright, and his wife. The party walked for over an hour in the Fulstone Banks area of New Mill, and hope to raise £90 for the Church of England Children's Society. 3rd August 1985.14 of 17This party of scouts, venture scouts and leaders from the 43rd Crosland Moor group left Huddersfield for a fortnight's holiday in Belgium. The 19 strong group, under group leader Mr. Geoff Ellis, will be based at a hostel belonging to the Belgian Guides' Association, 10km from Liege. During the holiday, they will go on walking trips, visit the Automium, at Brussels, the famous caves at Han-sur-Lesse and crossing into Holland and West Germany. 4th August 1985.15 of 17Playing the "planet game" at a rain soaked Brighouse Fun Day were (from left) Craig Leitch, Emily Stevenson and Joanna Dawson. Jackie Merrick - alias actor Ian Sharrock - took time off from Emmerdale Farm to open the Fun Day at Wellhome Park, Brighouse. The opening followed a parade to the park from a nearby supermarket car park by entrants in a fancy dress contest. The parade was led by Brighouse Royal British Legion Drum and Bugle Corps. Six youth organisations from Brighouse entered an "it's a knockout" competition organized by Mr. Jack Heymer, of Shelf Youth Club. The contests winners were Eastfield Youth Club, Lightcliffe. Teams of youngsters aged 13 to 18 were competing for a trophy donated by Mr. Andrew J. Taylforth, chairman of the Brighouse Youth Year steering group, which organized the fun day. Mr. Barry Dawson organized games for the under thirteens and the winners of the fancy dress competition were presented with prizes donated by Brighouse Lions Club. Organisations with stalls at the fun day donated £10 each to the main Calderdale International Youth Year funds. 4th August 1985.16 of 17A steady hand and a keen eye is needed in the potato and spoon race at Holme Valley Sunday Schools' sports day, with from left: Holly Scrimshaw, Sarah Bell, Ryan Morrie and Edward Williams. This was the second event of its kind and some 30 children took part.
