This bed-shaped cake, decorated with the sleeping figures made of icing, was given to nurses in the out-patients department by six men in appreciation of the 12 months' treatment they had been given there. It was made by Mrs Mary Smith, from near Penistone, a friend of Paddock man Mr John Hackett, one of the six patients. The nurses thought it was too good to eat straight away and decided to raffle it for our appeal. They sold tickets among Infirmary staff for 10p each, and raised about £20. Mr Peter Shaw last saw his mother and father Fred and Nora, of Water Street, in December, 1980. But the special occasion was too good to miss, so Peter arrived back in Huddersfield yesterday and rang his parent's doorbell at 9.45am. Mrs Shaw said: 'We had no idea he was coming home. It was a lovely surprise.' Mr Shaw intends to stay in Huddersfield for two weeks, joining in the celebrations and seeing how the town has changed. 26th March 1987.4 of 26What a lot we got ... Bags of money have been raised for the £500,000 Examiner Bodyscanner Appeal by these pupils of St David's School, Marsh, pictured with teacher Miss Janet Beaumont. They are amount about 50 children from the school who held stalls during their morning breaks and lunchtimes over the past month. They sold sweets, cakes, biscuits, toys and books they had brought from home - and raised about £90. But they are continuing their efforts until Easter and hope to boost the final total to at least £100. He has been awarded the 'Oscar' of the drinks trade, due mainly to his work for local and national charities. The women of Skelmanthorpe Methodist Church explained last night, in the first of four performances of the Whittington pantomime. The proceeds from the first night were given to the Examiner Bodyscanner Appeal, as were the takings from a cake stall, while the money raised tonight, tomorrow and Saturday will boost church funds. The Bishop also met children at Highburton C of E First School and visited the Kirkburton-based Allied Textiles. The event included a general knowledge quiz, which was won by Clayton West Cubs. Runners- up were St Joseph's Cubs, from Aspley. Bringing foreign flavour to the annual Kirkburton Gang Show are these flamenco dancers and these French-style artists.
