These Slaithwaite upholstery class members have it all sewn up when it comes to raising money for our fund. In April the Wednesday night class started having coffee and cake breaks, selling cake portions at 20p each for the bodyscanner, and now other Slaithwaite Adult Education Centre classes have joined in. The members, who meet at Slaithwaite Town Hall, make cakes on a rota basis, and will carry on until the appeal closes. So far the centre's work has raised over £60. The Bluebell Girls couldn't have done better than these theatre dance pupils from the Doreen France School, Crosland Moor, when they took part in a show for the bodyscanner appeal. Presenting Le Cage Aux Folles, the senior team was among more than 100 pupils of the school who were in the show, Curtain Up, at Venn Street Arts Centre, Huddersfield. The performance, which also included modern and tap dancing, was compered by Huddersfield Light Opera Society principal Fred Shaw, who gave a solo. Parents helped with raffles, refreshments and stewarding, and also made costumes. The event, produced by Doreen France, raised £670 for our appeal. 6th June 1987.7 of 45
Judging by the smiles, sales appeared to be brisk for these stallholders at a summer fair and coffee morning which raised more than £100 for the Sight Saving Association. The money raised by the event at Paddock Village Hall will go to the association's latest project to buy a Pachymeter for the Royal Infirmary's eye ward. The Pachymeter is an operating instrument which can cure short-sightedness. 6th June 1987.8 of 45

Testing some of the equipment provided at cost price for their Matterhorn climb are David Madden (left) and Chris Marsden (centre). With them is Dave Calverley (right), proprietor of the Peak and Penning Shop in Blackmoorfoot Road, Crosland Moor, which has provided the climbers with equipment worth £800 for only £300. A cut above the rest: That's 19-year-old Andrew McDonagh, who defeated about 50 hairstylists form all over the country to win a top national award. Andrew, of Salendine Nook, was chosen as the Hairdressers' Journal Salon Stylist f the Year at Manchester. His prize is a trophy, a photographic session with a top London photographer and a week's tuition at a top London academy of his choice. 24th June 1987.11 of 45
Staff at the Nags Head, Ainley Top, have received a certificate for their charitable efforts. Dr Barnado's have awarded the pub and restaurant a certificate as all the staff there contribute through their wages to the children's charity. The 24 bar, kitchen and restaurant workers each have 10p taken from their weekly wages which goes straight to the charity. The certificates are awarded when 100% of a firm are on the system. Colne Valley Ladies Hockey Club are chasing a third successive win in the Malburgen Trophy in Arnhem, Holland, this weekend. The club have won the competition for the last two years and the 14-strong party are pictured with the trophy as they prepared to set off from St George's Square on their five-day trip. 4th June 1987.13 of 45
Toddler appeal at the soft toy stall at a two-day craft fair to raise money for a £12,000 roof plea for Honley Parish Church are (from left) Mrs Heather Powell, Mrs Elizabeth Cummings and Mrs Cynthia Hepper. The event, at Honley's Southgate Theatre, is expected to raise about £1,000 towards the appeal to pay for extensive roof repairs to the church. Already the appeal has reached £4,000. Some craft makers demonstrated their skills and all kinds of craft items were available for purchase, including lace work, paintings, children's toys and games, wood carvings, jewellery and decorated eggs. 5th June 1987.14 of 45

About 200 guests attended the Eid celebration party at the Community Relations Council office in Westgate, Huddersfield, marking the end of Ramadan, the month of fasting for Muslims. Civic and community leaders and officers from various departments of Kirklees Council were welcomed by Dr Nasim Hasnie, chairman of the CRC, and received Asian-style refreshments. 5th June 1987.16 of 45
Miss Piggy and Orville were among the characters taking part in a fancy dress pub crawl from Clayton West organised by members of the Hirst Buckley Sports and Social Club. About 40 members took part in the sponsored event to raise money for the Examiner Bodscanner appeal. They were still counting up the proceeds today following their visit to 12 pubs in Clayton West, Scissett, Skelmanthorpe, Cumberworth and Denby Dale. Hector the lovable bloodhound is pictured with big-hearted pupils from Almondbury Junior School who raised £1,039 for charity. The children raised £655 for Help The Aged with a sponsored treasure hunt and collected an amazing 3,975 football stickers to earn £20 for the fight against cystic fibrosis. The children also raised £364 for the Huddersfield branch of the Royal Institute for the Blind and some of the money is to be spent on sponsoring a talking book. Acting head teacher Mrs Jennifer Hughes said that all 307 children at the school took part in the fund-raising events. 8th June 1987.19 of 45

Pub regular Carlton Earnshaw got in the swim to help raise £150 for the Examiner Bodyscanner Appeal. Carlton (right) is pictured with Janice and Bruce Granville, licensees of the Railway Inn, Honley. The money was raised at an inter-pub swim organised by Holmfirth and Meltham Lions Club at Holmfirth baths when Carlton was sponsored to swim a mile. The pub has organised events of its own to boost our £500,000 appeal, including raffles and a bar-top bottle to coincide with the opening of its new pool room. 8th June 1987.22 of 45
Stile Common Junior School pupils brought the Jungle Book to life at a concert in the school hall. The show, which involved 35 children aged 7 to 11, was accompanied by pianist Mrs Kay Millward. The children gave four performances and audiences included parents, pupils from Stile Common Infants School and old people from Castle Grange. Teacher Mrs T Blackaby directed the show and costumes were made by parents, teachers and friends. Some of the head-dresses were designed by pupils from Newsome High School. 11th June 1987.23 of 45
Giving a leg-up to charity are these regulars from the Somerset Arms, Aspley, who had it all tied up when they went on a three-legged fancy dress pub crawl. About 30 to 36 regulars went on the pub crawl around 11 pubs and clubs, and proceeds amounted to some £300 for the Huddersfield Royal Infirmary children's ward. The event was organised by the pub's sports and social club. 11th June 1987.24 of 45
Coming out on top are these children from Netherton Moor Playgroup, who raised £200 for Killingbeck Hospital, Leeds. They are pictured presenting the cheque to Dr Chandra Sekher Pal, of Netherton, whose daughter, a former member of the playgroup, died from a heart complaint at the hospital. A lift for the disabled and handicapped people taken on a coach trip by Holmfirth Rotary Club used for the first time a portable hoist bought by the club. Helping Mrs Florence Bray aboard are club presidents Mr Michael Tolson and Div Supt John Springer, of the St John Ambulance, whose organisation will be borrowing the hoist when it is not needed by the Rotarians. 13th June 1987.26 of 45
Pupils of Kirkburton Middle School perform a "moving" musical on the back of a lorry during the village carnival. The process was to the plying fields at Kirkburton First School where they days entertainment was held. Attractions included a fancy dress parade, a martial arts demonstration and performances from Emley Miners Band and Penistone Majorettes. Carnival queen Rachel Shaw was crowned and attended by Tanya Broadbent, Hanna Alden, Claire Tinsley, Stephanie Metcalfe and page boy Martin Turner. The event was opened by Miss Mandy Simpson, of Highburton, the former head of Turnshaws School. The school was one of the groups to benefit form proceeds of the carnival along with Kirkburton Playgroup and the village's uniformed groups including the newly formed beavers. 13th June 1987.27 of 45

Summer has come for these children at Birkby Junior School's Eid Mina bazaar, held to commemorate Muslim celebrations after a recent period of fasting. The bazaar, attended by pupils and parents from all religious backgrounds, featured both Asian and English stalls selling everything from spices to jewellery. Some of the 700 Examiner newsboys and girls who deliver around the Huddersfield area left town for the fun of Blackpool. They joined the eighth trip, organised by the Examiner and the town's newsagents. The destination was the resort's Pleasure Beach where they were sustained by hot dogs and pop, donated by Benjamin Shaw and Sons. Senior education officials inspected a pioneering industrial project set up between a Huddersfield School and an engineering firm. Officials from the Centre for Industrial and Education Liaison and Huddersfield Polytechnic and school representatives from other authorities inspected the twinning project between Newsome High School and David Brown Gears. 23rd June 1987.38 of 45

About 90 children from Golcar, Scapegoat Hill, Linthwaite and Slaithwaite took part in the concert. Former pupil Michael Hardcastle was back at his old school of King James to teach today's pupils a little about the techniques of writing children's books. A former Examiner reporter and In and About columnist now living in Beverley, Mr Hardcastle left King James in 1951 he was invited back as one of the writers who visits schools under the Yorkshire Arts Council.
