Staff at the firm raised the money through raffles and various other activities. The Willwood Avenue-based team won the title with Lepton running them a close second at Mirfield Sports Centre. Reinwood's team of Katie Burrows, Sundeep Kaur, Pippa Whitworth, Michelle Law, Sophia Munsi, Sara Russell and Catherine ware took the title with marks of 44.4 on vault, 44.15 on floor and 25.30 for their group routine for a total of 113.85 which puts them through to the British Finals at Stourbridge on Saturday, March 24. Lepton's second place came with marks of 108.75, floor 43.45, vault 42.40 and group routine 22.90, with Elin Crebbin, Rachel Burgin, Lisa Traynor, Kerry Arthur, Nicola Walls, Tracey Martin and Catherine Torr making up the team. Nicola recorded a total of 33.07 points from her exercises on vault, bars, beam and floor and her trophy success qualifies her for the British Schools Championship in two weeks time at Birmingham in which she will compete against Yorkshire gymnasts, including some of her club team mates. Nicola attends school in Rochdale and travels to the Greenhead Gym Club five times a week. 8th February 1990.8 of 26A new ruling that girls are to be allowed to join the Scouts has come 10 years too late for a 17-year-old Huddersfield's student. Gillian Kendall, of Dalton, struck a blow for women's lib in 1980 when she became a Cub Scout in skirts at Parkwood Methodist Church, where her mother was one of the leaders. But when a top-level scoutmaster heard of her investiture, he ordered clampdown on her membership. He said she was not allowed to join the pack under the Scouting Association's Royal Charter. Gillian said today 'I was very upset when they threw me out, But at least the powers that be have now allowed girls to join'. The Money is the total raised by Mr Day during his year of office as Foresters district district chief ranger. Part of it was collected at a brass band concert at Huddersfield Town hall, sponsored by ICI, with the rest raised through coffee mornings, raffles and other events by the Honley Court. Mr Day's money will provide a baby monitor for the hospital. 5th February 1990.10 of 26Laura Wright displays a £100 cheque from the Yorkshire Bank which helped fund Hinchcliffe Mill Junior and Infant School's conservation area. The Holmfirth school's 80 pupils worked for a year to complete the project on 500sq metres of land in the grounds. They designed the area, worked out costings, then tackled the digging and planting. The site now sports 12 new trees, with another 1 to be planted soon. The venture was made possible by grants totalling £400 from Kirklees Council, British Telecom and Yorkshire Bank. 14th February 1990.11 of 26Honley High School pupil Rachael Tinker hands over a cheque for £222.37 to Sister Una Taylor, of Kirkwood Hospice, who gave a short talk and showed a video at the presentation. With them are other second-year pupils who took part in a challenge to clean up the centre of Honley in one hour. Fifteen bags of litter were collected and graffiti was removed from seats and bus shelters. The money was raised by a street collection and boosted by donations from businesses in the centre of the village and collections in school. 12th February 1990.12 of 26A local church has taken a giant step for sex equality by appointing a Sunday school king. Nine-year old Matthew Hazlewood, of Holmbridge, will make history when he is crowned on Palm Sunday, April 8, at Hinchliffe Mill Methodist Church. Matthew, a pupil of Hinchliffe Mill Junior and Infant School, struck a blow for equality when he said boys as well as girls should be able to represent the Sunday School. His request was granted and he was elected to the role. Twelve-year-old Kim, who attends All Saints High School, receives the award for those who train over five hours a week. Kim won the club's championship at intermediate level and she impressed the judges with her poise and amplitude on the beam. She was also selected to train with Russain coach Tamara Yatchenko at the Carnegie Centre, Leeds. Fourteen-year-old Julie, who attends Colne Valley, won the recreational title, for those who train up to five hours a week for the third time, but it will also be her last as she now becomes one of the squad gymnasts who train up to nine-and-a-half hours a week. Julie is the West Yorkshire Under 14 champion and represented Yorkshire in the novice final. Champions... Yorkshire Inter-District League champions Huddersfield will be wearing new black sweaters with the town's coat of arms on them when they defend their title in the coming season. The £250 they collected form the sponsors, Hills Supplies, after they won the competition last year has gone into the kitty for the sweaters and pictured with the players, are new away team captain Geoff Ellis and Huddersfield Bowling Association president Steve Batler (front centre). 9th February 1990.18 of 26A fund-raising 12-hour sponsored sports marathon was held at King James' High School, Almondbury. It was organised by teachers Mrs Anne Ferguson (front left) and Miss Anna DiNapoli (right) from the performing arts department which covers drama, music and physical education. With them are some of the 70 pupils who took part, from left, Mark Hornsey, Helen Dale, Donna Green and Craig Pember. The marathon included about 12 different sports. Among them were table-tennis, aerobics, badminton, five-a-side football and trampolining. The sponsorship is expected to bring in between £400 and £500, which will be split between a trampoline for the school and the Holly Bank School Appeal. 16th February 1990.19 of 26Lepton County are sweeping all before them on the trampolining front. They are now through to the National Schools Finals following success at Blackburn in the North of England championships. David won the bronze medal and £500 cash from The Worshipful Company of Turners for devising a machine that speeded up the process of spirally-wound cardboard tubes for Bradford firm Field Packaging. David, who originally comes form Rotherham, but now lives in Birkby, said, 'I did my industrial training at Fields and kept close links with them in my final year'. David, 23 graduated from Huddersfield Polytechnic last summer with an upper second class honours degree in mechanical engineering. He is now a mechanical engineering designer at the Huddersfield ICIC plant. 6th February 1990.24 of 26The Examiner newspaper sales manager Tom Farrington, left, presents the new shield for the winner of the Examiner's newspaper delivery five-a-side football competition to Mr Robert Battye, vice-president of the Huddersfield branch of the National Federation of Retail Newspapers, which organised the event. Competitors look on. Sixteen teams of newspaper boys from local newsagents entered the competition at Newsome High School. The winning teams, who go through to the Yorkshire final in Dewsbury in April, were both from Kirshan's newsagents, Kirkheaton.
