When Tony Crowther found some old photos he set off on a huge task to name everyone on them.

Tony played local league football in Huddersfield from the mid 1950s up to the mid 1980s.

He discovered some photos of footballing trips to Amsterdam in 1973 and Ostend in 1974 which set him off on his quest.

And the photos on this page are the result of this labour of love – although Tony is anxious to trace just two more names.

Fartown County Secondary School Under 15s played a match against the teachers in 1960 and he wants to know the player who helped the teachers’ team (bottom right in the photo).

And the other name he is short of is on the photograph of the team from Birkby County Juniors U11 football team from the 1955/56 season. Again, the missing name is the player on the bottom right.

Much of Tony’s playing career was with the team representing Kirkheaton electrical installers T W Broadbent.

Tony was an electrician at the company from 1960 until 1985 when it closed down.

One of its major jobs was the electrical installation work when Cottam Power Station was being built near Retford in Nottinghamshire in the late 1960s and Tony lived there between 1966 and 1969.

Tony, 67, of Longwood, said: “I retired just over two years ago and was starting to clear a few things out when I came across these old photographs.

“Ever since then I’ve been tracking down the names and now I’m just short of these two.”

And he recalls the Fartown County Secondary school game against the teachers at Clayton Fields, Birkby, in 1960.

“Fartown used to play at Leeds Road Playing Fields but for some reason the game was switched to Clayton Fields,” he said. “It may have been that it took place at the start of the cricket season. It ended nil-nil which was amazing as it really was a case of men against boys.

“The teachers’ side featured former Fartown professional Don Devereux along with Arthur Oliver who was an ex Polish professional.

“The football pitches at Clayton Fields no longer exist – they have now been replaced by a housing development.”

The teams Tony went on to play for included Central Lads Brunswick Club U16s and U18s in the early 1960s, TW Broadbent FC from 1963 to 1980 and on January 5 that year he broke his leg in a game against Huddersfield YMCA.

TW Broadbent folded at the end of the 1979/80 season and Tony switched to Electro United in the Sunday league and rounded off his career with Field Head FC in the Sunday league in 1985 when he hung up his boots for good.
